South Range opens in fourth
COLUMBUS — South Range always does the best with what it’s got.
The Raiders are off to a 3-0 start and ranked fourth in Division V of the first Associated Press high school football poll of the season released Monday.
South Range — which has only three returning starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the second round of the playoffs — has rolled to impressive wins over Poland, 24-21; Girard, 56-28; and Niles, 35-7.
Sophomore quarterback Billy Skirpac accounted for 243 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in his first varsity start against Niles on Friday.
South Range carries a seven-game regular-season win streak into this Friday’s game at Jefferson Area.
Springfield, which played in the state championship game last December, is 3-0 and ranked fifth in Division VI. The Tigers, have outscored their three opponents a combined 125-20.
The Tigers, winners of 18 straight regular-season games, will host Lowellville on Friday.
St. Clairsville, which proved to 3-0 after a 34-20 win over East Liverpool last Friday, is ranked No. 1 in Division IV.
In Division III, Steubenville (3-0) and Canfield (3-0) are ranked sixth and ninth, respectively. Steubenville will host New Philadelphia on Thursday. New Philadelphia lost 31-24 at Canfield last Friday.
In Division VII, Warren JFK (3-0) is ranked second and Malvern (3-0) is ranked 10th.
The poll will run until Oct. 31 and will include some of the playoffs.
