Leetonia survives Sebring challenge

SEBRING — Leetonia needed a 20-point second quarter to get past a determined Sebring team, 38-33, Wednesday.

The Bears improve to 7-3 heading into toninght’s home game against Valley Christian.

Ella Gregorino topped the Bears with 16 points, three assists and three steals. Megan Rosko added six points, Samantha Schneider grabbed nine rebounds and McKendra Cole made three steals.

Seven Bears scored and they needed all of them. Minus the second quarter, the Bears were outscored 29-18.

Emma Whaley, who totaled 21 points and four steals, got Sebring off to a fast start. She had a three-pointer and a steal and layup in the opening minute to give the Trojans a 5-2 lead.

The Trojans led 7-6 after the first quarter before Gregorino got going in the second quarter. She had 10 points in the quarter, starting and ending it with three-pointers, including one at the buzzer to give the Bears a 26-11 halftime lead.

Leetonia managed only 12 points in the second half and finished shooting less than 22 percent from the field.

COLUMBIANA — Madi Matthews had 27 points but Edison knocked off Heartland 52-48 on Wednesday in girls basketball action.

Heartland is 4-8.

Savanna Ankrom had 17 points for the Wildcats, 5-9.

Heartland will be at Jackson-Milton on Saturday.

BELOIT — West Branch’s good start led to a 50-29 win over New Philadelphia on Wednesday in girls basketball action.

Anna Lippiatt had 14 points for the Warriors. Sydney Mercer added 10 points. Emma Egli had five boards. West Branch hit eight three-pointers.

West Branch travels to Marlington on Saturday.

West Branch is 11-3, while New Philadelphia fell to 7-5.

New Philadelphia won the jayvee game, 30-28.
