Sebring 61, Springfield 60

SEBRING — Matt Byrd hit a three-pointer as time expired as Sebring stunned Springfield and kept the Tigers from claiming a share of the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier title on Saturday night.

“It might be the biggest upset in the (Mahoning) Valley this year,” Sebring coach Brian Clark said. “All five of our guys touched the ball on the last play, so it’s a credit to them. And Springfield defended it well, Matt just hit a big shot.”

Sebring (6-16, 1-13) earned its first MVAC win of the season against one of the area’s best teams. Springfield is the top seed in the Division III district tournament and could have shared the league title with McDonald with a victory.

Sebring was down 18-9 after the first quarter and trailed by seven in the fourth quarter but kept finding ways to stay within striking distance.

“We led on the first bucket of the game and we didn’t have the lead again until the last one,” Clark said.

Byrd finished with a game-high 23 points, and teammate Trojan Frankie Lozoya added 19.

Adam Wharry led the Tigers with 16 points. Beau Brungard scored 13, and RJ Smith put in 12. The Tigers’ only other loss was against McDonald, which they beat in their second matchup. It was Springfield’s third straight loss in Sebring, according to Clark.

“I’ve got a bunch of seniors who didn’t want to lose their last game on their home court,” Clark said. “I’m beyond excited for them.”

Springfield drops to 15-4 and 12-2 in league play.

“Springfield is the Div. III No. 1 seed in Northeast Ohio this year for good reason,” Clark said. “They have depth, a great coach and a winning culture. When focused, they have proven to be among the elite teams in our area regardless of division.”

Sebring will play in a Div. IV sectional final against the Jackson Milton-Western Reserve winner on Friday.
