SALEM — Salem’s girls basketball team reached the finish line of the Eastern Buckeye Conference championship campaign on Monday but knocking off Alliance 61-36.

The Quakers (15-5, 10-2) ended up sharing the league championship with Marlington. The Dukes knocked off Alliance 96-36 on Saturday evening to win the school’s first league basketball title since 1993. Marlington (18-3, 10-2) had played a tournament game earlier in the day on Saturday.

Salem’s last championship came in 2019 when it won the first EBC title.

This season came with challenges however as the team had to endure setbacks due to COVID-19.

“It was definitely a season we will remember,” said Salem head coach Sarah Hamilton of winning the EBC co-championship. “We had our ups and our downs and our girls saw a lot of adversity and I was proud of the way they responded.”

Krista Barley sparked the Quakers with 18 points, while Kyla Jamison added 11 points.

In all, 14 Quakers saw action including many outside the team’s core.

“We have a lot of girls that deserve to play,” said Hamilton. “Our starters are only as good as our main core, those underclassmen who don’t see the floor a lot, so it was nice to give them a little bit of that love.”

Salem returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Kenston in a Div. II district semifinal.
