Perry loses to Laurel
BARBERTON — Seventh-ranked Shaker Heights Laurel ran away from 12th-ranked Perry, 54-31, in a Division II regional final Friday at Barberton High School.
Laurel (21-4) will play fourth-ranked McArthur Vinton County (25-1) in a state semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday at University of Dayton Arena.
Perry — which won the district title with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat Salem — reached the regional final for the first time and finished with a 22-5 record.
Mustang luck runs dry
BRISTOLVILLE — Mathews’ string of tournament upsets ended in the Division IV boys basketball district final Friday.
The 12th-seeded Mustangs dropped a 74-44 decision at fourth-seeded Bristol. Mathews, which opened the tournament with wins at Southern Local, Heartland Christian and Wellsville, finishes the season at 16-9.
In the other final in the super district, second-seeded Warren JFK captured the district title by rolling over top-seeded McDonald, 77-55. JFK opened up a 29-12 with five minutes to play in the second quarter.
Springfield captures D-III title
NEW MIDDLETOWN — The Springfield boys basketball team did not have to deal with the Salem curse with the Division III district tournament behind held at home sites this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The top-seeded Tigers rolled to a 35-19 halftime lead to beat fifth-seeded Andover Pymatuning Valley, 63-53, in a district final Friday.
