Warriors held hitless against Canfield

BELOIT — Canfield’s baseball team is looking like it might be a state title contender.

Ryan Petro threw a no-hitter on Friday as the Cardinals moved to 16-0 with a 10-0 win over West Branch in five innings.

West Branch falls to 13-7.

Canfield, ranked seventh in the state in Div. II, also beat Salem 10-0 to open the season.

Western Reserve 12, Columbiana 2

BERLIN CENTER — Zachary Pleska had a single, triple and four RBIs from the lead-off spot as Columbiana downed Western Reserve 12-2 in five innings on Friday.

Tyler Anderson and Seth Spooner had two hits and an RBI apiece.

Riley McElwain had a hit and two RBIs.

Columbiana is 14-4 and is at Salem on Monday.

TENNIS

West Branch 5, United 0

SALEM –United and West Branch’s tennis teams bounced around to complete their match on Friday.

Due to the windy and wet conditions the Warriors and Eagles started the third singles and second doubles matches at the Salem Racquet Club.

Once the outdoor courts at Centennial Park dried, the teams completed the match on those courts.

West Branch took the match 5-0 to move to 14-1 on the season and 9-1 in the North East Tennis League.

United is 6-6 and 6-4.

West Branch hosts Canton South Monday.

GREENFORD — South Range used eight hits scattered through the lineup to beat Howland 4-3 on Friday.

South Range is 17-3.

Bree Kohler had a hit and two RBIs for the Raiders. Juli Stachowicz and Madison Dado had a hit and RBI each.

South Range is at Boardman today.

Thrilla in Zoarvilla

ZOARVILLE –United senior Nathan Miller had a second and third place to top the Eagles at the Tusky Valley Invitational on Friday.

Miller was second in the discus (148-feet-6) and third in the high jump (5-6).

United was fifth in the girls team standings with 40 points and eighth in the boys standings with 38 points.

United’s Kaleb Nastari and Ellie Marhefka had a pair of third-place finishes.

Nastari was third in the in the 800 run (2:08.44) and joined Zachary Nastari, Landry Hardcastle and Shawn Hawkins on the third-place boys 3200 relay team (8:58.9).

Ellie Marhefka was third in the 1600 run (5:31.86) and girls 3200 relay with Addyson Blazer, Hannah Minor and Morgan Briceland a(10:27.0).

Other Eagle third-place finishers were Sydney Young in the 3200 run (13:09.82) and Grayson Kidder in the high jump (4-6).
