SALEM — Salem junior High volleyball tryouts will be held from 9-11 p.m. on Aug. 2-3 at Salem High School.

Golf scramble Aug. 7

COLUMBIANA — The Art Rohrer Memorial Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, at Valley Golf Club.

It is a four-person, nine-hole scramble with team times from 1 to 3:#0 p.m.

Cost is $30 per person or $120 per team, which includes green fees, two carts per team, picnic dinner and prizes. To enter or or more information, call Valley at (330) 482-9464.

All proceeds will benefit the Columbiana High School boys golf team.

West Branch, Poland coach to receive award

COLUMBUS – West Branch girls soccer coach Cheryl Ficco and Poland football coach Tom Pavlansky, formerly at Lakeview, are among the recipients of the Ohio Hgh School Athletic Association Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award.

The coaches associations select one of their own for the award, which reflect the values of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity through their professional responsibilities and are role models for student-athletes and others.

YSU football predicted to finish 9th

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State was picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference preseason poll Tuesday.

The Penguins are coming off a 1-6 season, which was played in the spring of 2021 instead of the fall of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Youngstown State senior linebacker Grant Dixon was named a preseason first-team All-MVFC selection.

Dixon, who transferred to YSU in the spring from Marist, made an immediate impact. He led the Penguins with 55 total tackles, including 40 solos.

Also for YSU, offensive tackle Dan Becker, tailback Jaleel McLaughlin and safety Zaire Jones were named preseason second-team, while defensive end James Jackson and all-purpose standout Christian Turner were named to the honorable mention squad.

The Penguins’ season kickoff of on Sept. 2 when they host Incarnate Word at Stambaugh Stadium.

Wilson shoots 2-over-par

WARREN –Former Columbiana High School state champion Jared Wilson opened the 115th Ohio Amateur Championship at Avalon Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.

Wilson shot a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 36th in the 144-golfer field.

Eastern Michigan’s Max Watson, an Ashland High School graduate, took he lead with a 4-under 68 on the 7,206-yard Avalon Lakes course.

Tied with 69s are Cade Breitenstine, a teammate of Wilson’s at Kent State University, along with Ohio State’s Chandler Jackson and Rutgers’ Luke Wells.

The second round will be held today. Wilson is scheduled to tee off at 1:30 p.m.
