Warriors, Raiders search for perfection as playoffs loom
West Branch and South Range are 80 percent of the way there in the quest for perfect seasons and the two Mahoning County powers are poised for big runs in the Ohio high school football playoffs which start in three weeks.
West Branch is ranked No. 4 in Div. IV and South Range is No. 2 in Div. V in the latest Associated Press Ohio High School Football Poll released on Monday.
The Warriors (8-0) finished off Alliance early 50-27 last Friday to improve to 4-0 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference.
West Branch hosts winless Minerva this Friday and is all but guaranteed a share of the EBC title.
Quarterback Dru DeShields now has 706 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Through the air, he is 136 of 189 for 2,061 yards 24 touchdowns with just two interceptions thrown.
His main target through the air Nick Wilson had 847 receiving yards for 12 touchdowns.
Steve Marra leads the team with 786 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns. His 138 points is also a team-high.
West Branch is averaging 479 yards of offense a game.
South Range (8-0) demolished Jefferson Area 63-21 last Friday and has a road date with winless Lakeview this Friday.
The Raiders will likely have a season-finale to remember as undefeated Hubbard looms large in a Northeast 8 game many fans are looking forward to on Oct. 22 at South Range.
Hubbard is ranked No. 9 in Div. III and is at Niles this week.
