Bluejays handle Bears

LEETONIA — Unlike last season, Leetonia’s football team was able to get on the field in August, but the Jackson-Milton Blue Jays were waiting on Thursday.

The Jays got off to a good start on the season with a 54-0 win at Leetonia High School.

Alex Schiavi threw seven touchdown passes for the winners. Keegan White caught three of the touchdowns.

It was the first game for the Bears under John Protopapa.

The two teams were meeting for the first time since 2016 when the teams were a part of the Inter-Tri County League.

Leetonia is at Martins Ferry on Aug. 26.

Jackson-Milton hosts Newton Falls on Aug. 26.

Sebring falls in opener

SEBRING — Sebring’s football team opened the season with a 36-14 loss to Cleveland Lincoln West on Thursday.

The Trojans travel to Mathews on Aug. 27.

Pirates end skid

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit two home runs, JT Brubaker pitched seven shutout innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a six-game losing streak, beating the Boston Red Sox 8-2 Thursday night.

The Pirates avoided a three-game sweep and sent Boston back to one game under .500 at 59-60. The Red Sox are five games behind Toronto for the third and final AL wild-card spot.

“We’re not going to win every game,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “It’s going to happen. We’re disappointed. We hate losing, but we took two out of three. Now, we have Baltimore, we’ve got Tampa and Toronto, right? Now, you’ve got to win series.
