Salem boys are rolling now
CANTON — The Salem boys bowling team made history Wednesday with the first win in program history.
The Quakers beat Canton Central Catholic, 1,997-1,614, at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes
Connor Hippely had a 208 high game and 399 series to top the Quakers. Keegan Sommers had a 191 game and 369 series. Vinnie Yannucci had a 342 series, Donald Blackburn a 331 series and Luke Spielman a 327 series.
Canton Central won the girls match, 1,509-1,310.
Kylie Smith led Salem with a 164 game and 298 series. Brooklynn Herold added a 281 series and Cloe Dean a 259 series.
Weir gets double-double for Titans
GREENVILLE, Pa. — Westminster College junior Drew Weir had his first collegiate double-double, but Thiel won 77-68 Thursday at Maenpa Court.
Weir, a Salem High School graduated, had 16 points and 10 rebounds. He had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Junior Jaxon Hendershott from West Branch added three points and three rebounds, while Trevor Siefke from Lisbon played six minutes off the bench.
Thiel improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the President’s Athletic Conference. Westminster lost its fifth straight to drop to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the PAC.
The Titans will host Waynesburg at 4 p.m. Monday.
Two games postponed
Thursday’s winter weather forced the postponement of the Southern at Valley Christian and Indian Creek at East Liverpool girls basketball games.
The Indian Creek at East Liverpool game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 11. The junior varsity will play a two-quarter game starting at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
Avon captures first state title
CANTON — Former Mount Union standout Mike Elder guided Avon to its first state championship on a snowy Thursday night.
Top-ranked Avon ran for 303 yards in a 20-13 win over second-ranked Cincinnati Anderson in a Division II state final in front of 4,911 fans at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
Avon finishes at 16-0 with Elder as head coach. Cincinnati Anderson drops to 15-1.
Quarterback Nolan Good, a Kent State University commit, ran for a game-high 190 yards on 19 carries, including a 71-yard dash to open the scoring, and passed for 143 yards and another score.
Cincinnati Anderson quarterback Justice Burnam ran for 148 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries and passed for 150 yards and a touchdown.
