McCord declares for draft

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord announced Friday on social media that he is declaring for the NFL draft after one season with the Orange.

McCord leads the nation with 4,779 yards passing this season, a total that broke Deshaun Watson’s Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record. He made the AP’s all-bowl team after passing for 453 yards and five touchdowns in a victory over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.

Before that, McCord threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns as the Orange beat then-No. 6 Miami 42-38 in the regular-season finale and knocked the Hurricanes out of the ACC title game.

McCord ranks fourth nationally with 34 touchdown passes, production that helped the Orange finish with a 10-3 record.

“I want to be the one who brought (Syracuse football) back to what it once was,” McCord said after the win over Miami. “That’s a testament to this team. This win shows that Syracuse is for real and being part of that team that turned things around, that’s going to last forever.”

McCord started his career at Ohio State. He passed for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Buckeyes as the starting quarterback last season.

Fans banned from all stadiums

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has banned two fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts during a World Series game at Yankee Stadium from attending any games at big league ballparks.

MLB sent a letter to Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen this week informing them of the decision.

“On Oct. 29, 2024, during Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, you interfered with play by intentionally and forcefully grabbing a player. Your conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player and went far over the line of acceptable fan behavior,” said the letter, the contents of which were first reported by the New York Post and later obtained by The Associated Press.

“Based on your conduct, Major League Baseball is banning you indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities,” the letter said. “You are also hereby banned indefinitely from attending any events sponsored by or associated with MLB. Please be advised that if you are discovered at any MLB property or event, you will be removed from the premises and subject to arrest for trespass.”

The fans were ejected from the game on Oct. 29 and banned from Game 5 the following night.

Betts leaped at the retaining wall in foul territory and caught Gleyber Torres’ pop fly in the first inning, but a fan in the first row with a gray Yankees road jersey grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Another fan grabbed Betts’ bare hand.

The Yankees called the behavior “egregious and unacceptable.” The team said Friday the two fans MLB banned were not season ticket holders.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed his family lost its home in the raging wildfire in Pacific Palisades this week.

Redick became emotional when he spoke about the fire’s impact for the first time Friday after practice with the Lakers, whose scheduled game Saturday against San Antonio was postponed late Friday. The Clippers’ home game Saturday against Charlotte also was postponed, and both the Lakers and Clippers are scheduled to be home Monday and Wednesday as well.

“I’m not sure I’ve wept or wailed like that in several years,” Redick said.

Redick said the rented home burned down Tuesday while the Lakers were on the road in Dallas. Redick’s wife, Chelsea, and their two sons were safely away from the neighborhood, but Redick drove into Pacific Palisades on Wednesday to see the fire’s impact.

“I was not prepared for what I saw,” Redick said. “It’s complete devastation and destruction. I had to go a different way to the house, but I went through most of the village, and it’s all gone. I don’t think you can ever prepare yourself for something like that. Our home is gone.”

Redick got emotional at times while contemplating the fate of a neighborhood that had embraced his family since Redick became the Lakers’ head coach last summer. A recreation center where Redick spent time with his sons and was preparing to coach them in a basketball league is completely gone, along with nearly everything else.

The Redick family was renting the home in Pacific Palisades while they decided where to settle permanently in Los Angeles.

“Everything that we owned that was of any importance to us in almost 20 years together as a couple and 10 years of parenting was in that house,” Redick said. “There’s certain things that you can’t replace, that will never be replaced. … The material stuff is whatever. My family and I were processing the self side, the individual side, of losing your home, and you don’t ever want to wish that on anybody. It’s an awful feeling to lose your home.”

The Lakers’ home game against Charlotte on Thursday was postponed, as was a home game in the same downtown arena between the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and Calgary on Wednesday.

The NFL has already moved the Los Angeles Rams’ wild-card playoff game against Minnesota to Glendale, Arizona, making the decision four full days before the Monday night contest.
