Heartland secures first OVAC basketball championship
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Led by Collin Kalaher’s game-high 33 points, Heartland Christian’s boys basketball team raced to its first OVAC Class 1A boys basketball championship with a 71-67 win over New Matamoras Frontier on Saturday at the ECO Center.
Kalaher was named game MVP for Heartland by the OVAC. Frontier was led by Jacob Bowersock’s 28 points.
The Lions led 36-34 at the half and 53-49 after the third quarter.
Heartland moved to 16-5 on the season, while Frontier is 11-8.
The Lions will travel to South Range today for a regular season game against the 17-4 Raiders.
Heartland is slated to open tournament play on Saturday against Open Door Christian at Heartland.
OVAC notes
Steubenville Central won the Class 2A OVAC title with a 43-38 win over Toronto. Morgantown stopped Steubenville 70-64 in the Class 5A title game. In the Class 3A game, Wheeling Central Catholic beat Monroe Central, 60-56.
Wellsville 60, United 38
WELLSVILLE — Tyrell Watkins had 23 points, while Andrew Mackey added 13 points in Wellsville’s 60-38 win over United on Saturday in boys basketball regular season play.
Wellsville is 10-12 and 7-7 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. United is 5-17 and 2-12.
United was led by Kadin Schonauer’s nine points.
United won the jayvee game, 36-33. Kota Shasteen had 13 points for the Eagles. Haydin Oliver had eight points for Wellsville.
Wellsville hosts Southington on Saturday in a Div. VII sectional. The Eagles are at Grand Valley on Friday for a tournament game.
