Cardinals get the best of Branch

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — When the Canfield Cardinals get the lead, they never give it up.

The top-seeded Cardinals held off 22nd-seeded West Branch, 35-28, Saturday in a Division IV district final at North Ridgeville High School.

Canfield led 29-20 late in the third quarter. West Branch pulled within two points, but Canfield ran some clock and hit a three-pointer on the way to victory.

Landon Shina paced the Cardinals with a game 12 points.

Canfield improves to 21-4 and will play Warrensville Heights (19-5) in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Canton Fieldhouse. Second-seeded Warrensville Heights advanced with a 62-57 overtime victory Saturday against 15th-seeded Marlington.

West Branch won six of its last seven games to finish with a 13-12 record.

Cooper Anderson guided the Warriors with 11 points and four rebounds. Gavin Gregory totaled eight points and six rebounds. Jeremiah Thomas had five rebounds and two assists.

West Branch had 18 turnovers and Canfield had eight.

Canfield captured the district title for a second straight season.
