Standout day for Salem grad

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State graduate student and former Salem High School standout Hunter Christopher repeated as the men’s 10,000 meters champion at the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday night.

Christopher won for the second year in a row, posting a meet-record and school-record time of 29 minutes, 27.27 seconds at Farmers National Bank Field. He topped a field of 17 runners.

Youngstown State freshman Caleigh Richards, who was a state champion at Maplewood High School, finished third in the women’s 10,000 meters (35:50.31). Oakland (Mich.) senior Grace Nolan topped the 18-runner field (34:17.44).

In the women’s discus finals Friday, Youngstown State senior and Crestview High School graduate Krista Perry was second in 134-feet-6, just behind Purdue Fort Wayne freshman Makenna Dommer at 136-8. There were 24 throwers.

In the men’s discus finals, YSU senior and Springfield Local graduate Coleson Kertesz finished second for the second year in a row. He had a throw of 160-9 on his first attempt.

Milwaukee freshman Josh Cygan topped the 15-thrower field in 167-5. He had the top four throws.

A pair of Salem High School graduates ran in the women’s 1,500 preliminaries on Friday night.

YSU junior Carly Hall earned the last qualifying berth, finishing 12th (4:43.13), while YSU freshman Megan Stafford finished 17th (4:48.74).

Robert Morris junior Samantha Hennen posted the top qualifying time (4:36.18) among 36 runners.
