Praising a gem in Salem’s crown of jewels
To the editor:
Sunday afternoon, Dec. 4, the Salem Music Study Club hosted the 55th annual choir festival. Ten vocal choirs and musical groups conducted one of the finest Christmas festivals in its history. I hope you run into someone who was there! They will tell you!
The First United Methodist Church’s spacious sanctuary was filled to nearly overflowing. Every musical selection was great! Mrs. Ruth Newman, the choir festival chairperson and her committee are to be praised, commended and thanked.
When I came to Salem as pastor of the First United Methodist Church in 1988, Homer Taylor was our church organist. Mrs. Jeannette McCleery, was our director of music. Both were instrumental in founding and nurturing the festival through the years. They along with their spouses Opal and Jake are with the Lord. All four would be extremely pleased with this year’s 55th annual choir festival.
Mark your new 2017 calendar now. The 56th festival will be Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. Be warned: come early. It is likely to have an SRO (Standing Room Only), full house congregation.
The festival is just one gem in Salem’s crown of jewels!
