Lawson, Clapper among candidates for Minerva Council

MINERVA -- Two of the four people running for seats on Village Council want to see improvements in town cleanup.

Cynthia "Cyndy" Lawson, 61, was first elected to council in 2011 and said that if re-elected she would like to beautify Minerva by getting property owners to take pride in their homes and keep their properties looking nice.

"I am seeking re-election because I love making a difference," she said.

She added that she likes that citizens feel they can trust her with their concerns, and take those concerns to council on their behalf, without divulging the source.

She said that she also works to make sure the village's laws are upheld and takes the time to talk with the citizens about the issues they are concerned about.

She is married to Bob Lawson and they have three children, (one deceased) and one granddaughter.

Outside of her service on council Lawson works as a Realtor at Another Listing LLC.

Her previous work experience includes retail at Big Fishers Wheel, Vans Sports Shop, Small Towne Fashions and Off the Beaten Path.

She was also a past Realtor for Wade Realty and Auction Service.

Like Lawson, candidate Dennis Clapper also sees a need for more beautification in the village.

Clapper, 70, served on council from 2001 to 2005 and worked for the village from 1972 to 2000. He served as water superintendent from 1985 to 1991 and service director from 1991 to 2000.

He worked as a building inspector for Lake Mohawk from 1997 to 2013. He served in the Army from 1968 to 1970.

Clapper said that he is running for council because he has a great deal of experience and knowledge about various departments within the village.

"Minerva has been my home for 65 years and I want it to continue to be a great place to live and raise a family," he said.

He said improvement could be made with getting the village to clean up some of the areas that have fallen into deterioration.

He and his wife Deborah have three children and three grandchildren.

Candidates Elliott Hannen and John Shipman did not respond to candidate questionnaires.
