SALEM -- Dollar General said the new store built at 1000 W. State St. is "tentatively" set to open in the next two weeks.
Another store proposed for 1297 Pidgeon Road and with the store in the Salem Plaza at 2350 E. State St., the company will operate three stores in the Salem area, after it closes downtown at 514 E. State St.
Employees from the downtown store will be relocated to the West State Street store and they are currently packing merchandise from the downtown location to be moved to the new store.
All the permits have been obtained to build a new Dollar General store on Pidgeon Road.
The location is at the corner of state Route 45 and was last used by the Hunan Buffet Restaurant, and years earlier by Denny's and L&K.
The Miller Holding Group of Schuylkill Haven, Pa., owns the property and Angela Petkovic, a spokesperson for Dollar General, said the company was in the "due diligence phase" for the Pidgeon Road store. Perry Township Zoning Officer Allan Wolfgang said permits have been issued that include signage for Dollar General.
Petkovic said Dollar General is exploring more locations in the area.
"At this time, Dollar General is currently in a due diligence phase for two stores in Mahoning and Columbiana counties. In addition to Salem, we are also in due diligence phase for a new Dollar General in Damascus," she said.
She explained that when choosing store locations, meeting customers' needs is Dollar General's top priority.
"The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice.
"We know convenience is a major factor in our customers' shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10-minute drive.
"This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet. Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on the Damascus location by the end of this year.
She said a press release will be issued in the week before the West State Street store opens.
