LEETONIA -- Following the departure of the village’s mayor’s court magistrate, council has reduced the hours of the clerk.
Council Wednesday night agreed to change the mayor’s court clerk to an as needed position, determined by the mayor. The move is in response to former magistrate Kathleen Bartlett resigning after being appointed by Gov. John Kasich to the Seventh District Court of Appeals, making the clerk position not needed unless the magistrate position is filled. Current cases are being handled in Columbiana County courts.
According to Fiscal Officer Randy Chismar’s notes from the meeting, a 1997 resolution stipulates that the mayor’s clerk position cannot be abolished or the person filling the post fired by the mayor without consent of council. Mayor Kevin Siembida made the recommendation to council since there is no need for a clerk without a magistrate.
Following a half-hour executive session, council unanimously approved the change.
Cheryl Altomare is currently the mayor’s court clerk.
In other business, council requested Village Solicitor Walter Newton to draft legislation to prohibit solicitors in the village.
Council also approved the closure of Main Street between Walnut and Elm streets from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 18 for the Italian American Club’s car show; and the purchase of two tons of stone for $140 and rubber mulch and curbing for $1,545, both for the parks.
