Salem Historical Society plans Cruise events

SALEM--During Salem's 12th Annual Super Cruise weekend, the Salem Historical Society will be participating three of the four days--Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Open all three days will be featured exhibits in the Shaffer Library meeting room, tours available in the Society's Industrial/Transportation room, concessions at the Pond/ Barrett Gazebo and Society's Gift Shop.
Saturday is projected to be the big day when two local national race winners plan to be present. The two drivers are Mark Thomas of Louisville and Francis "Krutch" Crider. Thomas has raced for 25 years on the International Hot Rod Association circuit, where he was a seven-time IHRA Funny Car champion after getting his start on Quaker City 's asphalt. Crider, a five-time national event winner as a driver and car owner, was a regular fixture on the Quaker City Drag Strip. They will have displays of memorabilia collected over their years in drag strip racing.
Other nationally knows drivers participating will be Flynn Auto Group with "Time Bandit," Bill Pakula and his "Honkin Hemi," Butch Chovan with his "Red Baron" and Pat Moore bringing his "White Lighting." It was recently announced that Gary Drause co-owner of Mongoose Motorsports in Ravenna will bring their 1963 Corvette Grand Sport Gasser, "Fast and Furious." All of these cars will be displayed under a 60-foot tent, easily visible on the Society property from the main exhibit area of Timberlane's parking lot.
Also open all three days in the meeting room will be a "Tribute to Leo Taugher" who for 37 years was an announcer for the National Hot Rod Association and announcer of many races around the country, who had his start at Quaker City Drag Strip. The exhibit is contributed by Dan Chamberlain of Columbiana.
Also featured will be "Legends of Quaker City Drag Strip from 1970" with vintage photographs of the drag strip provided by Richard Weber of Lisbon.
Friday and Sunday will feature the display of local vintage automobiles. Expected participants include David Johnson, Dick Owlsey, Scott Darling, Richard Shanker, Ed Barnhart and Daryl Fink.
