"Spelling Bee" auditions planned
LISBON -- Stage Left Youth Players will audition for "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at 7 p.m. today at the Trinity Playhouse, 234 E. Lincoln Way. Directors Kandace Cleland and Jodine Pilmer and guest choreographer Reed Allen Worth seek an adult cast of five men and four women to play the various comedic singing roles for this PG-13 production. Actors should come prepared to sing a short musical selection and dress comfortably to learn a simple dance combination.
Rehearsals will begin the week of Aug. 21 and the shows will run Oct 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22. For more information contact Cleland@gmail.com or 330-831-7249.
Animal identification program set
EAST LIVERPOOL-- Naturalist Richelle Gatto will present an animal identification program describing the things they "leave behind" from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser scheduled
EAST ROCHESTER -- The public is invited to a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday at New Alexander Christian Church, 7665 Rochester Road. The meal includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 10. Carryouts are available. Proceeds will be directed to Elkhorn Valley Church Camp.
Ladies tea set in Columbiana
COLUMBIANA -- The Historical Society of Columbiana-Fairfield Township will host its annual ladies tea at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 28 E. Park Ave. Tracie Manning, curator of education from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will present "The Triumphs and Trials of Mary Todd Lincoln as First Lady." Field Day to be held in North Jackson
NORTH JACKSON -- Mahoning Ag Field Days: Farm Management and Technology Field Day is slated from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Ward Campbell Farm, 11440 Palmyra Road, North Jackson.
Speakers Eric Romich and Clif Little of Ohio State University Extension will focus on topics such as solar and wind technology, along with current practices in energy efficiency. To demonstrate, Romich will use a portable solar unit. They will cover the financial side of things as well, and will show how technology can be beneficial to both small and large farms. Farm management plans will also be a topic of discussion.

WW II bombers at Akron airport
GREEN -- The Military Aviation Preservation Society Air Museum (MAPS) will welcome the Collings Foundation's "Wings of Freedom Tour" from Aug. 11-13. World War II bombers available for touring include a B-24 Liberator, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell and a P-51D Mustang Fighter.
Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger. This includes museum admission and parking. The museum opens at 9 a.m. However, Friday's touring time will be from 2 to 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, touring the aircraft will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coupons and discounts do not apply.
MAPS Air Museum is located on the west side of the Akron Canton Airport at 2260 International Parkway just off Route 241 (Massillon Road) in the city of Green. Minions featured at "Despicable Palooza"

Seed Exchange planned
CANFIELD -- The Bring One Take One Flower and Seed Exchange and Garden Art Sale, sponsored by Mahoning County Extension, will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 12 in the Pumpkin Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds, 7265 Columbiana Canfield Road. During this time, many garden and patio decorations will be for sale by the Mahoning County Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners will be present to offer gardening advice and answer any questions. United class schedule distribution
HANOVERTON -- United Local High School will distribute class schedules for students in grades eight to 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 14 and 15 in the high school office.
The Freshman Laptop Orientation begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 in the high school auditorium. This meeting is for all ninth graders and their parents.
Moongazing at Minerva park
MINERVA -- The Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Minerva is hosting a moongazing event at 9 p.m. Aug. 16 in Bicentennial Park located on Murray Avenue. Events to mark Burchfield's Golden Year
SALEM -- Salem events will mark the centennial anniversary of watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield's Golden Year -- 1917." The Burchfield Homestead Society is celebrating with special events in mid-August.
Burchfield grew up in Salem and returned after college to work in the office of Mullins Manufacturing Company. During his off hours in 1917 he created 400 paintings--many of them are masterpieces in museum and private collections.
Two different Burchfield-designed wallpaper samples will be sold during the events. The framed paper pieces have "Birge" and "Designed by Burchfield" printed along their trim line edges. Burchfield designed wallpapers for Birge in Buffalo, N.Y., before his art career took off in the 1930s.
Nancy Weekly, the world's leading authority on Burchfield, will be the featured speaker at Dinner with the Burchfields at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave.
Weekly is the Burchfield Scholar, Head of Collections, and Charles Cary Rumsey curator for the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Signed copies of "The Sacred Woods," Weekly's book about Burchfield, will be available for purchase.
Several of Burchfield's local relatives will also be on hand to share reminiscences about his life and work. Dinner tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance at the office of Attorney Fredric E. Naragon, 248 E. Burchfield's Homecoming, a one-man show starring Chris Fidram and directed by Jeanne Elser, Burchfield's grand niece, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and 2 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Salem Community Theatre, 490 E. State St.
The play was written by Dick Wootten, former Cleveland Press art critic and a founding member of the Burchfield Homestead Society. The play was originally produced in 1993. It features Burchfield's memories of growing up in Salem and explains how he came to feature the town's buildings and rural scenes in his paintings. Tickets are $15 for adults, $11 for senior citizens, and $9 for students under 17, and may be purchased in advance at Naragon's office and Lib's Market, 474 E. State St., Salem, or at the theater one hour prior to the shows.
