Pasta bowl dinner set today at St. Paul
SALEM -- The pasta bowl dinner, sponsored by St. Paul School Home and School Association, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at St. Paul School, 925 E. State St., prior to the Salem vs. United Local varsity home football game.
Cost is $7 which includes your choice of three pasta entrees, bread, salad and a beverage. Entrees will be provided by Ricky's English Pub, BB Rooners, Boneshaker's, Salem Golf Club, Pizza Joe's, Kris Egli and Friends, Mike's Penn Ave. Grille, Adele's Place, Guilford Lake Grille, Salem Regional Medical Center and Nathan Walker.
Baked goods and 10-week raffle tickets will be available for purchase. Pasta bowl tickets are available in advance at the school (330-337-3451), school families and Essential Vision Care/Dr. Rebecca Brown, 389 N. Ellsworth Ave. (330-332-1200). A limited number of tickets will be sold at the dinner.
Farms to Forest dinner tickets
SALEM -- Tickets are still available for the Columbiana County Farm Bureau's Farms to Forest dinner on Sept. 9. A gourmet meal featuring local meats, local produce and local wines will be served on the Greenisen Century Farm, 1904 Depot Road. Guests will arrive at 5 p.m. to tour the farm, visit the Greenisen's prize-winning Hafflingers, view antique horse-drawn vehicles and see the maple sugar house. There will also be a Chinese auction featuring unique items; a fire pit, a locally raised lamb, a plane ride over the county, etc.
The dinner will be catered by the Spread Eagle Tavern of Hanoverton with each of the five courses paired with a wine from The Vineyard at Pine Lake. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center. Tickets are $100 each and a table of eight is $750. Kitchen garden program offered
CANFIELD -- Peg Zeleznik, Mahoning County master gardener volunteer, will show participants how to get creative with their space at home and start a kitchen garden at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18 at Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Broad St. An educational program follows from 10 a.m. to noon.

Activities set at SalemLibrary
SALEM - The following activities are planned this month in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. Unless noted, registration is required at salem.lib.oh.us, 330-332-0042 or in person.
A laughter yoga class is slated from from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5 with Teresa Lisum, certified yoga leader. Attendees are reminded to wear loose fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. Floor yoga is not included in the program. Lisum's classes include Laughter Yoga, Dancing Mindfulness, Drum Circles and Mindful Doodling.
Naturalist Chris Mosebach returns to Waterworth Memorial Park 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 to present the program, "Excited for Autumn: A Walk on the Nature Trail" during the "Go Wild in the Park" series of educational and entertaining programs provided by the library and Salem Parks and Recreation Department. The nature trail is located at Sunset Boulevard off of North Lincoln Avenue. Mosebach is a naturalist who has worked all over the United States from Yellowstone National Park to Oil Creek State Park. For the past 47 years he has developed his storytelling skills in sharing his vast knowledge and experiences with the natural world. Some recent presentations include Secrets of The Indian Medicine Man, Survival Hacks, Primitive Fire Making, Wilderness Survival, Wild Foods, Tree Identification, Archery Instruction, Animals of the Night and dozens of other outdoor topics. He has a degree in both forestry and environmental education from Penn State and is a certified interpretive guide.
The Gettin' Crafty class for adults begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11. Attendees will make autumn leaf decorated Mason jars which may be used in a variety of decorative and practical ways. All materials will be provided.
Professional Massage Therapist Jesse Thorne will explain the techniques and benefits of Reiki during the Wellness Wednesday program at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13. Thorne is a massage therapist at the Massage Cafe LMT in Canfield. He is also a martial arts enthusiast.
"Cybersecurity Help, Information, and Protection Program (CHIPP) begins at 2 p.m. Sept. 14. As technology continues to be an ever increasing part of the lives of people of all ages it is important to know and to understand how to protect electronic devices and keep personal information private and safe. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of both security and privacy, including the special challenges presented by the use of smartphones and other mobile devices at this CHIPP presentation.
Salem Parks and Recreation and the library will present Story Trail 2017 from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 23 when they follow Waterworth Memorial Park's Nature Trail where participants can read the story "Pete the Cat and the "Cool Cat Boogie."
In addition to the fun on the nature trail there will be a sing-along concert with entertainer Chip Richter from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Orashan Civic Center Band Shell. Free refreshments will be available. No registration is required for this "Go Wild in the Park" event.
"Commonwealth" by Ann Pratchett will be reviewed when the Book Discussion Group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26. The discussion is open to the public and free of cost to attend. Books are available in the adult services department located on the library's upper level. Registration is not required.
Horticulturist Ellen Speicher returns to the library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 to present another of her gardening program. The topic is "Pruning Basics" which covers the most important elements of good pruning including making proper cuts, the best time to prune and what equipment to use.
Following graduation from Youngstown State University where she earned a degree in biology, Speicher worked as director of horticulture at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 2004 she began work at Mill Creek MetroParks. Within the MetroParks system she served as assistant horticulture director at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 2004-14. Currently she teaches classes in horticulture and gives programs on many gardening topics to garden clubs, Master Gardeners and civic and community groups.
Southern Local collects for Houston
SALINEVILLE -- The Southern Local School District is showing its generosity to children affected by the ravages of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas, by holding a weeklong school supplies collection.
The district is joining other schools in the area as part of a special outreach program created by Lisbon resident Josh Kupka, who was in Galveston working for a military defense contractor when the hurricane hit. Kupka was delivering military vehicles and became stranded in Texas due to the flooding. He said some of his colleagues were performing boat rescues after the storm, but he wanted to find another way to help and reached out to schools around his hometown to raise school supplies for children who had lost so much. Lisbon, Southern Local, Salem, United, East Palestine and Leetonia have joined so far but even more have been contacted to lend a hand.
Southern Local will take donations during the Indians' home football game from 6-9 p.m. today at the ticket booth to help the cause and the collection will continue during regular school hours until Sept. 8, after which the donations will be sent to help impacted youth in the flood area. Kristy Sampson, principal of Southern Local Elementary and district co-director of federal programs, is organizing the campaign and put out the call to families that Wednesday.
"We are accepting school supplies of any sort -- paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, folders, scissors, backpacks, etc.," she said. "This is a 'fill-up-the-truck' effort. The person who contacted [Superintendent John Wilson] is bringing a truck to the district next week to collect the donated items and take them to the Houston area."
Students in Ashley Bergman's high school English class are creating posters to support the campaign as part of their "Feel Good Friday" activities and placing them at the drop-off sites in each school building, while high school technology teacher Jody Lockhart and her pupils were creating signage for the football game. Sampson said the goods should be sent around next Friday and she hopes to see the school community help give something back.
"Our community always donates to causes in need and I expect a great response," she said.
Meanwhile, Kupka said local schools can collect until Sept. 21 if they choose, while he and his friends will cover the cost of the deliveries with no expense to the districts.
"Instead of doing an individual effort, I am asking schools to do it districtwide so we can make more of an impact," he said. "We will pick up and sort the items and make deliveries without costs to the school systems."
Kupka estimated that more than 200,000 students were in the Houston's school district alone, but one truckload of items could potentially help 10 percent of those children. Meanwhile, athletic teams at several local schools were hosting events to benefit the cause.
"Schools can help schools and the kids can get involved," he said. "What's great about our area is that we know each other and can do some good together. The school districts are doing all the work and I'm just giving an outlet to help."
Drive-thru dinner set in Winona
WINONA -- The "Cook's Night Off" drive-thru dinner will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 6, or until sold out, at the Winona United Methodist Church, 32114 Winona Road, Winona. The menu offers million dollar pasta (similar to meat lasagna), salad, Italian bread and a frosted brownie. Cost is $8. Call ahead and pre-order at 330-222-1211 before noon that day.
Guilford Ruritans plan fish fry
GUILFORD LAKE -- An all-you-can-eat fish fry will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Guilford Lake Ruritan Club on Hanna Drive off Route 172. Cost is $10 per person. All profits are used for community needs.
