Vendor space still open for Salem Quakerfest
SALEM -- Applications are still available for a vendor table/tent spot for Quakerfest on Oct. 14 in downtown Salem. Applications are available online at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce's website at salemohiochamber.org or by calling 330-337-3473. The deadline for submission is Oct. 9.
Joshua Dixon welcomes dads to event Friday
COLUMBIANA -- Joshua Dixon Elementary School will welcome dads and father figures during its Dads of Great Students (DOGS) event on Friday. Fathers and students will meet in the cafeteria at 7:30 a.m., have breakfast and do an activity together. Cost is $1.
The program is through All Pro Dad's Day, an organization in 46 states, including 30 chapters in Ohio, according to the All Pro Dad's Day web site.
Joshua Dixon parents, Bruce Jefferies and Jeff Jackson, started Columbiana's chapter in April as a way to help strengthen families and the community. More than 40 dads attended events and organizers are hopeful that number will grow this school year.
"The events center around dads having breakfast with their child, intentional conversation and games that cover topics such as respect, service and being a good friend," said Jackson. "Local projects are also supported by the collective group, such as collecting items for a food backpack program that benefits children in Columbiana." DOGS members are encouraged to volunteer at the school for different projects throughout the year.
Bake sale, spaghetti dinner set Saturday
EAST ROCHESTER -- A bake sale and all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be available from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the New Alexander Christian Church, 7665 Rochester Road. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for up to age 10 and free for preschool children. Carryouts are available. Proceeds will be used for Gabe Snyder's Eagle Scout project.
Drive-thru ham dinner planned in Columbiana
COLUMBIANA - The public is invited to a drive-thru ham dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the First United Methodist Church, 210 S. Main St. Cost is $8 per person.
Tickets still available for St. Paul raffle
SALEM -- Tickets are still available for the annual 10-week raffle, a fundraiser sponsored by the St. Paul Home and School Association. Proceeds help to support the fine arts department at the school. Tickets are $10 each.
The weekly drawings of winners begin the week of Oct. 11 and continues through the week of Dec. 25. A limited number of tickets will be sold and the winners need not be present to win.
Tickets are available for purchase from St. Paul students/families or by calling the parish office at 330-332-0337; St. Paul School office at 330-337-3451, or Teresa Dyke, chairperson, at 330-501-7442. Students will also be selling tickets after each Mass. With each ticket purchased, there are 22 chances to win. There will be two weekly drawings for prizes. The prizes are: $50 each (weeks one through six); $100 each (weeks seven through 10); and two grand prizes of $500 each (on Dec. 25).
Spot paving planned for section of US 30
LISBON -- A section of U.S. Route 30 is included in an upcoming spot paving project set to begin Oct. 9. Paving work will take place on U.S. 30 just west of the Stark County line.
Spot paving will also take place on state routes in Carroll and Holmes counties as part of this $156,000 project. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers.
ODOT's contractor is Superior Paving and Materials Inc. from North Canton. The completion date is Oct. 31. For more information contact: D11.PIO@dot.ohio.gov or 330- 308-3949.
' Salem Asset Event' set at KSU City Center
SALEM - "The Salem Asset Event" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Kent State University City Center.
According to the press release provided by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, "this is an event to highlight examples of opportunities youth can engage in throughout their communities. Everyone within the community can help build Developmental Assets in youth. Ultimately, an entire community can become involved in ensuring that young people receive the strong developmental foundation they need to become capable, caring, community members."
Debbie Pietrzak of Salem Regional Medical Center will speak about the results of the Search Institute's Developmental Asset Survey which is taken by youth in local area school districts.
Wendy Phrenger, director of the Rural Scholars Program at Kent State campuses in Columbiana County, will share the Rural Scholars Program and its impact on youth.
Pastor Pete Fowler from the Salem's First Friends Church, will provide a faith based perspective.
Nicole Miller from the Ohio State University Extension office will present the various opportunities that promote assets and leadership skills in youth. Local organizations will provide resource tables to promote activities available for youth. There will be raffles available for a chance to receive gift certificates to local area family events. The Salem Key Club will provide complimentary refreshments.
Sponsors of the Community Event include Columbiana County Educational Service Center, Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention Team Coalition, Coordinated Action for School Health Coalition, Columbiana County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, Salem Regional Medical Center and East Liverpool City Hospital.
The event is free of charge with no registration required.
