KSU-Salem named Tree Campus USA, will observe with Earth Day events

The campus will celebrate this recognition during its Earth Day observances beginning at 10 a.m. April 26 on campus.

To receive this distinction, KSU had to meet the Tree Campus USA's five standards, providing detailed documentation for each standard. These include maintaining a tree advisory committee; having a campus tree-care plan; dedicating annual expenditures for its campus tree program; holding an Arbor Day observance; and leading a student service-learning project.

The Horticulture Club is planning a full slate of free activities to celebrate Earth Day, including a series of demonstrations and displays, tree planting and raffles for hanging baskets and a tool bucket filled with items to help get ready for planting. The public is invited to all activities. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Horticulture Department will hold a plant sale in the student lounge area.

Featured speakers and presenters include Anna Detoro of Davey Institute and a graduate of the KSU horticulture program at 10:15 a.m.; Paul Snyder of the Ohio State University's Seacrest Arboretum at 11:15 a.m.; Chris Carlson, associate professor of horticulture, will conduct a tree-climbing demonstration at 12:15 p.m.; and Dr. Tyre Proffer, professor of biological sciences, speak about extraction of essential oils at 1 p.m.

The Salem campus is home to KSU's horticulture program, where students can earn associate degrees in three concentration areas (urban forestry, landscape design and turfgrass management) or a bachelor of applied horticulture. CC Career and Technical Center to host

Apprentice Recruitment event April 26

LISBON - The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center (CCCTC) is hosting an Apprentice Recruitment Fair on April 26. The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition (MVMC) and Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network are planning the event to assist manufacturers who are looking for reliable employees. All companies at the recruitment event will be seeking candidates for full-time employment and entry into apprenticeship training programs. These companies will be on site to meet, interview and hire interested individuals for a paid apprenticeship that can lead to full-time employment.

"Companies are looking for candidates with employment history and a willingness to learn. While manufacturing experience is preferred, it is not required. This is a significant shift where manufacturers are willing to invest in candidates who have demonstrated dependability in unrelated jobs that may not offer the advancement opportunities and related pay and benefits," said MVMC Executive Director Jessica Borza.

Current high school seniors who are interested in a career in manufacturing will be able to meet and interview from 4 to 5 p.m. during the event. Adults are invited to meet and interview from 5 to 7 p.m. This event is free to the public. Resumes are suggested, but not required.
