Dr. Johnson will present Wellness Wednesday topic today at Salem Library
SALEM -- The Wellness Wednesday topic, "Natural Remedies for Common Ailments." will be presented by Dr. Kristi Johnson at 6:30 p.m. today in the Quaker Meeting Room at the Salem Public Library. Specifically to be discussed is the use of vitamin D3, turmeric, elderberry and silver. A question and answer session follows.
Dr. Johnson is originally from Columbiana County, graduated from Wellsville High School in 1990, Youngstown State University in 1993 and Northeast Ohio Medical University in 1997.
She completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) in 2001 at Wellspan Health in York, Pa., and has been involved in women's health care ever since. She is a board-certified OB/GYN currently working in the community and affiliated with Salem Regional Medical Center.
She has two daughters, Megan (15) and Emmaleigh (12) who attend Heartland Christian School. She is a co-owner of the Supplement Station, soon to be Back Home Market and Cafe, with her sister, Kelli Miller, CPA.

Damascus Community Center hosting breakfast fundraiser Saturday
DAMASCUS -- The Damascus Community Center will host a pancake, sausage and egg breakfast fund raiser from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Damascus Friends Church (west entrance). Cost is $6 per person for the meal which will be prepared and served by the park board of trustees. All proceeds will be directed to park maintenance.

Salem VFW Post 892 Auxiliary hosting public breakfast Sunday
SALEM -- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892 Auxiliary is hosting a public breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the post home at 496 Arch St.
Haystacks or a traditional breakfast of eggs, pancakes, hash browns, sausage patties, toast, orange juice and coffee are available. Cost is $5 per meal.
Work will begin Monday on SR 45 and South Lincoln Ave. project
SALEM -- Work is set to begin next Monday on the state Route 45 (East Pidgeon Road) and County Road 444A (South Lincoln Avenue) intersection improvement project.
This project includes the addition of a left turn late and reconstructing the existing signals for added safety.
Traffic will be maintained at all times with existing traffic signals and intermittent flagging throughout the project.
The contractor for this $944,759.57 project is Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co. of Youngstown.

Cobbs will address the Damascus Historical Society Tuesday
DAMASCUS -- Kay Cobbs will speak when the Damascus Area Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Pearce House, 28959 Salem-Alliance Road.
Cobbs is a descendant of Ervin Bailey, inventor of the Ohio Historical Marker along Route 534 in Damascus. Guests are welcome. The business session follows.
Book sale, carryout homemade soup sale will benefit Tenwek Mission Hospital
EAST LIVERPOOL -- A book sale and carryout homemade soup sale fundraiser is slated from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Northside Community Church, 702 Orchard Grove Ave.
All proceeds from the semi-annual book sale will once again benefit Tenwek Mission Hospital in Kenya, earmarked to rebuild a hospital facility that burned down Feb. 9.
Caren Miller, book sale chairman, said thousands of donated books have been collected over the winter from public libraries in East Liverpool and New Cumberland.
Owners of the former Best Books First bookstore donated 154 boxes of books and hundreds more were given by individuals.
"We hauled in nine pickup truck loads of books this week and we are selling them for $1 or 50 cents, or 10 or 25 cents for children's books," she said.
The soup sale will run each day at 8 a.m. until the day's supply is sold out.
Donated books may be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday as the sale is being set up.
Miller said the book sale has raised $6,000 over the past two years, all of which has been forwarded to Tenwek Mission Hospital for surgical equipment, medical and surgical care and supplies for impoverished patients in the African nation of Kenya.

SALEM--A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. April 28 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.
The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.
Youngstown Shrine Club hosting public spaghetti dinner April 29
NORTH LIMA -- Area residents are invited to a spaghetti dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 at the Youngstown Shrine Club, 1735 W. South Range Road (main hall). Tickets are $10 for adults.
The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, beverage and dessert.

YSU students participating in Dare to Care project beginning Friday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Students from Youngstown State University (YSU) will volunteer to work with area non-profit organizations during the Dare to Care Project organized by the Williamson College of Business Administration. The Dare to Care event will begin at 8 a.m. Friday with breakfast in the atrium of the Williamson College of Business Administration.
Students will be released at 9 a.m. to work at the Animal Welfare League, Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown, Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley, American Red Cross, Rich Center for Autism and Youngstown Playhouse.
At each organization, students will receive a tour, participate in an information session and complete a volunteer activity.
YSU students will organize work areas, paint or clean up around the building, pull weeds, lay mulch, paint four inside murals, work with disaster team to prepare disaster trailers for tornado season and assist with a special school preview event. The day will culminate with a luncheon at each organization.
