Washingtonville cleanup scheduled May 19
WASHINGTONVILLE -- The village cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 at the village hall at 415 S. County Road.
It will be in conjunction with the CCH Environmental Group. A 40-yard dumpster will be available for village residents to discard anything but paint, electronics, large or small appliances, branches or lawn clippings.
Fairfield Township cleanup is May 3
FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP -- The township will hold a cleanup from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 3 at the community building at 3062 Fairfield School Road, Columbiana.
Tires, 10 per household, car and light truck, off the rim; scrap metal/large appliances, no refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers or anything with freon' and large household items, furniture, mattresses etc.; will be accepted. No electronics will be accepted.
Lamppost Farm celebrating Earth Day
COLUMBIANA -- Lamppost Farm is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday with free hayride tours at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m.
Guests can learn about the raising of Devon cattle; what happens to the land after the grass-fed chickens have been on it; and, what the bake oven is made from and why they get the spent grains from Birdfish Brewing Co. The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring local artisan works.

2018 Safety Banquet is today
SALEM -- The Salem Area Safety Council, a committee of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, is hosting its 2018 Safety Banquet today at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave.
Approximately 50 businesses will receive awards for making safety a priority in the workplace. Officials from the Youngstown and Columbus offices of the Bureau of Workers' Compensation will be assist with the award presentations.
Nationally known speaker Zonya Foco will present "Staying Healthy in a Culture That is Anything But." Foco has appeared on television and written numerous books. She has worked with Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer and she has made it a priority to be called "America's Nutrition Leader."

Slovak Club serving breakfast Saturday
SALEM -- The public is invited to a haystack breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Slovak Club, 313 S. Ellsworth Ave.

Salem Music Study Club will meet
SALEM -- Salem Music Study Club will host its final meeting of the 2017-18 season at 7 p.m. April 25 in the educational building next to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Guests and members are welcome to attend as final touches are placed on next year's officer list. Scholarship dates will be discussed and prepared for as well the May banquet.
A program of opera presented by Anna Anderson follows the brief meeting. Refreshments will be served. The music club is a member of The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
'Go Wild in the Park' program is April 25
SALEM -- A "Go Wild in the Park" program, hosted by Salem Parks and Recreation Department and Salem Public Library, begins at 6:30 p.m. April 25 in the Quaker Room. "Wild Mushrooms: A World of Wonder at Out Feet" will be presented by Walt Sturgeon of East Palestine. Registration is required at salem.lib.oh.us or, 330-332-0042 or 330-332-5512. Attendance is open to the public and free of cost.
Sturgeon is a field mycologist with over 40 years of experience studying and identifying mushrooms. His photos of mushroom and fungi, some award-winning, can be seen in numerous mushroom field guide publications, three of which he co-authored: Waxcap Mushrooms of Eastern North America, University of Syracuse Press, 2012; Mushrooms and Macrofungi of Ohio and the Midwestern States, Ohio State University, 2013, and Mushrooms of the Northeast, Adventure-Keen Press. He has also written Mushrooms and Other Fungi of the West Virginia High Country, and was a contributing author to the Encyclopedia of Appalachia, University of Tennessee Press.
Sturgeon has received the North American Mycological Association Award for Contributions to Amateur Mycology, and Northeast (North America) Mycological Federation Eximia Award, both for contributions to the advancement of amateur mycology. He is the past president of the Ohio Mushroom Society and has associations with many other mycological organizations. A retired social worker, he and his wife Trish have two children and two grandchildren.
Kite festival is April 28 at MetroParks Farm
CANFIELD -- Mill Creek MetroParks and the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites will host a kite festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28 at the MetroParks Farm. Experts will brighten the skies with kites and their ingenious designs. Bring your own kite to fly and enter in free games. Youth can enjoy bubbles, wind activities and sky crafts. The activity schedule is dependent on weather and wind. The event is free to attend. Create-a-kite kits and some crafting activities have a small fee to cover the cost of materials. Apprenticeship Job Fairs scheduled
LISBON -- The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition (MVMC) is organizing two Apprenticeship Job Fairs: from 4 to 7 p.m. April 26 at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, 9364 state Route 45, Lisbon; and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 3 at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St., Youngstown.
Manufacturers are looking to fill more than 50 paid apprenticeship opportunities in the machining, welding/fitting, and industrial maintenance fields.
"These apprentices will start earning a paycheck and get great benefits immediately. They can expect to earn more than $70,000 upon completion of their apprenticeship program. Plus, they will earn more than 30 college credits, and all of their classes are paid for by the companies," said Jessica Borza. MVMC executive director.
According to the Oh-Penn Apprenticeship Network, "Those who have completed apprenticeships earn $441,330 more over their lifetime than bachelor's degree recipients."
Companies will be on site to meet, interview and hire interested individuals with limited to no manufacturing experience. Individuals who are offered apprenticeships will be hired with the intent to participate in a 2-3 year paid apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship job fair is free to attend, and pre-registration is not required. Individuals are encouraged to bring resumes and be prepared to complete applications on the spot.
Chef will present chocolate program
SALEM -- Chef J.R. Straley will present "Chocolate" during the "Play With Your Food" series program at 6:30 p.m. May 7 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library's Quaker Room, 821 E. State St.
Attendees will learn about chocolate, its history and some of the tantalizing ways it is used. Chef Straley is the culinary arts instructor at Columbiana County Career and Technical Center (CCCTC).
He has been involved in the culinary industry for over 30 years. His experience has grown during his work as an executive chef, consultant, corporate chef, food service director and trainer. At this stage of his career he is sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the culinary industry with his students at the CCCTC.

SCC offering lifeguard training course
SALEM -- Salem Community Center (SCC) is offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course from June 4-15. Classes will run from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost is $220 for members and $260 for non-members. Upon completion participants will receive lifeguard training, first aid, professional rescuer, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator essentials certifications. Soap Derby hosting STEM Summer Camp
AKRON -- The International Soap Box Derby will host the sixth annual Soap Box Derby Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Summer Camp at Derby Downs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 11-15 and also June 18-22.
This program is designed for youth ages 9 to 12 and will give them the opportunity to participate in STEM-driven activities. Youth will design, build and race daily soap box derby cars down the Derby Downs track. Youth will also construct, test and compete in a Mini Soap Box Derby race.
There will be a variety of other fun, hands-on activities throughout the week as well as Friday's Soap Box Derby and Mini Soap Box Derby Car races. Family and friends are invited to attend and cheer for their racers during the competition and awards presentations and tour the Soap Box Derby's Hall of Fame and Museum.

Historical Society hosting membership drive
SEBRING -- The Sebring Ohio Historical Society will hold its first Membership Drive Week April 23-29. A society member and docent will be available to offer tours from noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday hours will be noon to 2 p.m.
Special days for incentives follow: Monday: free memorabilia piece; Tuesday: free $5 off coupon toward a Christmas Eve set of dishes; Wednesday and Friday: free raffle ticket for a holiday movie event; Thursday: free pottery piece; and Saturday: free large cookie.
In addition to the daily incentives, anyone purchasing a lifetime membership will receive a raffle ticket for The Smithsonian quality Bicentennial mug. On Saturday, there will be a bake sale from noon to 2 p.m.
The movie "Easy Living" with Ray Milland and Jean Arthur will be screened from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission to the movie is open to anyone who is currently a member, a new member or renewed member. Guests may attend the movie if they have donated to having toured the Strand Monday through Saturday. Concessions will be available for purchase and two raffles will be drawn.
