Rescue Mission fundraiser at Tinseltown

BOARDMAN -- The Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley is hosting an exclusive pre-released red carpet charity event on Sept. 11 at Cinemark Tinseltown in Boardman. Show times will be featured at 5:40, 6, 6:20 6:40 and 7 p.m. in order to raise awareness and support for the Mission's Capital Campaign to #MoveOurMission. Seats will be limited to 500 guests.

With an online gift of $15 submitted to the web address at unbrokenmovie.eventbrite.com, donors will know that their gift has contributed to the goal of constructing a much needed replacement homeless shelter in Mahoning County and a movie ticket to the red carpet event. In addition, the movie ticket will provide them the opportunity to enjoy the movie three days before the worldwide release at this exclusive showing.

The event is being supported by Gold Sponsor: Joe Dickey Electric with additional support from PureFlix, Dearing Compressor, Victory Christian Center and United Healthcare.

"Here at the mission, we are beginning the countdown to this event and are so thankful for the sponsors who made this fundraising event possible, said Jenna Hoffsmith, Rescue Mission development coordinator. "I'm personally looking forward to the event to see the community come together and support the #MoveOurMission campaign through their donations with their movie ticket as the mission is in a desperate need for a new building."

Based on Laura Hillenbrand's bestselling book, "Unbroken: Path to Redemption" begins where the hit movie "Unbroken" concludes, sharing the next amazing chapter of the unbelievable true story of Olympian and World War II hero Louis Zamperini.

Built in 1930 and currently crumbling, the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley's existing facility is beyond repair. There are insufficient restroom facilities, an abundance of leaks and crumbling walls inside and outside of the facility. Housing an average of 114 men, women and children nightly and providing three full meals to anyone in need daily, the mission has been in the community since 1893 and is currently celebrating its 125th year of ministry. A new single-story 36,000 square-foot facility is currently being planned at a cost of $4.25 million. Just under $900,000 is left to raise in the campaign. Scarecrow contest to aid Rescue Mission

CANFIELD -- A second-time event has been planned to promote the needs of the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley's clients at White House Fruit Farm. The Rescue Mission's "Scare Away Hunger" contest will take place throughout October with specific dates for participation.

Individuals interested in creating a scarecrow to be entered into the contest must provide a $10 entry fee at White House Fruit Farm per scarecrow so that they can create, dress and place their best scarecrow on a stake to be dropped off at White House Fruit Farm from Oct. 2-4. From Oct. 8-21, visitors to the farm will vote for their favorite scarecrow by purchasing $1 tickets and placing their votes in the buckets by the scarecrows they like best. The winner with the most votes will be announced on Oct. 22 and will receive cider and doughnuts as their prize.

"We love partnering with the community to host fundraisers that generate interest in the mission. Events like this at White House allow the community to have a little fun and make a difference for the average of 114 homeless men, women and children who stay with us nightly," said Lynn Wyant, vice resident of development at the Rescue Mission.

Kim Hull Sisco, store manager, emphasized how White House is a community-based farm and how they find it important to support the Rescue Mission. "The 'Let's Scare Away Hunger" event allows White House Fruit Farm to provide an opportunity for our customers to participate and give back to the community by voting for their favorite scarecrow, which supports the needs of the Rescue Mission," she said.

All entry fees, tickets donations and scarecrow clothing will be donated to the Rescue Mission. For more information contact rescuemissionmv.org or whitehousefruitfarm.com.
