Breakfast at Salem VFW canceled
SALEM -- The public breakfast on Sunday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 892 has been canceled. The next breakfast is scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at the post home, 496 Arch St.
Fossil investigation topic at library
SALEM -- Cheryl Mattevi, a local geologist, will present the next "Go Wild in the Park" program at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. She will show how to closely investigate fossils using specimens owned by the library. Attendees are welcome to bring one or two specimens for identification. Dinosaurs coming to library Feb. 4
SALEM -- Lynette Reiner will present the "Go Wild in the Park" program titled "Dig Those Dinosaurs" at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library. Reiner is the science director from the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum. She will discuss the three time periods dinosaurs lived in and have a special activity after the talk for the children who attend. This program is provided through the partnership of the library and Salem Parks and Recreation Department. Registration is requested at salem.lib.oh.us, 330-332-0042, or Amber Smith at 330-271-8913.
Music presentations at Salem church
SALEM -- Special music presentations will occur during the 10:30 a.m. worship services the last Sundays of January, February, March, April and May at the First Presbyterian Church.
The Western Reserve Brass Quintet and timpani, along with the Bravura Woodwind Quintet will perform at these services, enhancing the worship experience. On Jan. 27, the guests will perform "Galliard Battaglia" by Samuel Scheidt "Rondeau" (Theme from Masterpiece Theatre) by Mouret, and "Die B--nkels--ngerlieder. The brass and timpani will also accompany the choir on the anthem "At the Name of Jesus" by Lloyd Larson.
On Feb. 24, the Western Reserve Brass and timpani will accompany the choir on the anthem "O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing" by Eric Nelson.
On March 31, the woodwind quintet Bravura will accompany the choir on Joseph Martin's "The Weeping Tree."
The Western Reserve Brass and timpani will accompany the choir on April 28 on "Earth and All Stars." May 26 will include the brass and timpani accompanying the choir in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Mansions of the Lord," a special arrangement by Gary Kekel. Special music during worship service is graciously funded in part by Kim and Geoff Goll, along with the church music fund. The Rev. Dr. Meta S. Cramer is the pastor of the church, John Krauss is director of music and Nancy McNeal is the organist.
Eastern Gateway College to move
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC) has announced the move of its Mahoning County Aspire program onto the campus of Valley Center effective Jan. 28. This move will be one of many exciting changes for the EGCC Aspire program.
Ohio's Aspire programs provide free services for individuals who need assistance acquiring the skills to be successful in post-secondary education and training, and employment. Local programs offer classes at flexible locations, and on different days and times to meet diverse needs. All students are required to attend orientation, where an assessment is given to help determine the individual's educational needs and goals.
EGCC is reaching out to the residents of the Mahoning Valley to offer free classroom opportunities for those seeking a high school equivalency and or workplace/college skills remediation. In addition to the high school equivalency prep classes, Aspire also offers the following services in Mahoning County: developmental education at EGCC, English for Speakers of Other Languages, citizenship classes, distance education, bridge classes for post-secondary education, correctional facility education, and community partners at Ohio Means Jobs centers throughout the county.
The EGCC Aspire program has consistently ranked in the top tier of all programs in the state of Ohio, under the Ohio Department of Higher Education. In addition to Mahoning County, EGCC Aspire offers these services in four other Ohio counties: Jefferson, Harrison, Belmont and Carroll County.
