POLICE REPORTS

SALEM

— A domestic dispute was reported at 1:42 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of Franklin Avenue. Officers spoke with all involved and found no threats or violence occurred.

— Police responded at 1:30 p.m. Monday to the 500 block of East Fourth Street for a possible criminal mischief report. Officers met with staff at the Smith Center who explained that residents believed someone was tampering with their vehicles. An extra patrol was requested.

— An officer responded at 10:45 a.m. Monday to the area of the railroad tracks on Newgarden Avenue where there was a female allegedly walking the tracks near American Standard contemplating suicide by train. No female was located.

— William J. McFarland, 46, of Continental Drive, was taken into custody at his residence at 3:27 a.m. Monday on an active warrant out of Columbiana County for failure to appear on an OVI (operating a vehicle while intoxicated). He was turned over to a deputy.

— While on another call in the 400 block of West Fifth Street at 10:23 p.m. Sunday, an officer saw a male and female get into a verbal altercation outside near the street in an alleged neighbor dispute. They were yelling profanities at one another and were told to return to their residences. Both were given a verbal warning for disorderly conduct.

— Barking dogs were reported at 10:09 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of West Fifth Street. Police made contact with the owner who brought the dogs inside and was given a verbal warning and told the consequences if the matter persists.

— William C. Batton, 32, of 579 1/2 E. Third St., was taken into custody on a charge of domestic violence and taken to the Columbiana County jail after police were called for a domestic fight at 8:19 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Third Street. A man said he and his girlfriend heard a disturbance and a woman yelling to stop being hit. Officers made contact with the female who had a large amount of blood on her face and clothing. She said she had an argument with her live-in boyfriend and he choked her, slapped her in the face several times and then struck her in the face with the palm of his hand. She said she struck him back to get him off of her. Fire department first responders and an ambulance arrived and she was taken to the hospital. The male involved said his girlfriend had been arguing with him and she was not letting him leave the house and had been hitting him. He said he struck her in the face so she would get away from him. He had scratch marks on his neck and a handprint on his back. He was also transported to the hospital and upon release was taken into custody.

— An officer at 7:45 p.m. Sunday saw an unattended barbecue fire in the front yard of a Washington Avenue property where the person was told to attend to the fire or put it out.

— Police were called at 4:14 p.m. Sunday to Pizza Hut, 325 W. State St., for suspicious activity with two people in a vehicle. Police identified the two people as juveniles and recovered drugs and paraphernalia after making contact. One juvenile will be charged for the drugs recovered . Both were taken back to the station and released to an adult. Perry Township Police assisted at the scene.

— A woman in the 200 block of Fourth Street came to the station at 2:15 p.m. Sunday to report threats she received from her daughter while visiting her at Salem Regional Medical Center. She said her daughter signed herself out of the hospital against medical recommendations. She tried getting on the elevator with her and her daughter shoved her trying to push her out. She said her daughter told her to get away from her or she would kill her. She wanted charges filed against her and wanted to pursue a protection order. Information will be sent to the prosecutor for review.

— Robert Daugherty, 25, of 284 E. Third St., was charged with domestic violence after police were called at 2:08 p.m. Sunday for a domestic in progress at his residence. Police located a male who was highly intoxicated yelling and a woman bleeding from her hand. After an investigation, police determined the male was the aggressor. He was placed into custody and due to his intoxication and violent action, he was transported straight to the Columbiana County jail from the scene. Firefighters were called there at 2:13 p.m. for a possible natural gas leak. All readings with a multi-meter were in the normal range. The gas range was tipped over and the burners were on, leaking natural gas. The range was put back in its normal position and the burners were shut off.

— Officers responded at 11:46 a.m. Sunday to the 200 block of West Wilson Street for a domestic called in by a third party. No one reported any problem at the residence. Two females were asked several times if everything was ok and they said it was.

— A temporary license plate found at the car wash on South Lincoln Avenue was turned in to police at 11:43 a.m. Sunday. An attempt will be made to contact the owner.

— A domestic dispute was reported at 10:38 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of East Sixth Street. Both parties said nothing physical occurred. The female attempted to leave when an argument began. The male made comments regarding his safety that concerned officers. He willingly responded to the hospital for evaluation.

— Clyde Hoops, 64, of Niles, was cited for assured clear distance ahead after his vehicle struck the rear of another westbound vehicle on East Second Street at North Ellsworth Avenue, driven by Karen Stewart, 69, of Deport Road, at 3:19 p.m. April 5. Hoops told police he could not feel his foot on the brake and the vehicle drifted forward. Stewart was taken by ambulance to the hospital for injuries.

PERRY TWP.

— Police responded at 3:05 a.m. Monday to Salem Acres on Prospect Street for a suspicious person. He told police he was gathering belongings from his relative’s vehicle.

— Police at 12:56 a.m. Sunday assisted Salem Police with a disorderly person at Boneshakers on East Pershing Street inside the city. Township officers also assisted Salem Police on a call at 12:51 a.m. Sunday at the Powerhouse Cafe on South Broadway Avenue for an assault involving multiple people.

— An officer at 9:13 p.m. Saturday responded to the Salem Regional Medical Center emergency room to speak with a male who accidentally shot himself in the hand while handling firearms. He advised he was “dry firing” his handgun and accidentally shot himself in the hand. A followup investigation will be conducted.

— Police responded at 6:13 p.m. Saturday to the area of West Wilson Street to assist Salem Police on an assault involving multiple people.

— A caller at 5:55 p.m. Saturday reported a reckless driver possibly abusing narcotics in the area of the bypass and Pidgeon Road. No vehicle matching the description was found.

— Amanda Kozma, 25, of Lisbon, was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign after her vehicle struck an eastbound vehicle on state Route 344 at the Cunningham Road intersection at 4:39 p.m. Saturday. The report did not identify the other driver, but a Lisbon man was listed as the caller. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. No injuries were reported.

— Police were called at 11:28 a.m. Saturday to the 1200 block of Depot Road for a parking complaint with a vehicle blocking a driveway. No vehicle was found.

LEETONIA

— Police responded to the Leetonia K-12 campus at 12:41 p.m. Friday where the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving two open 911 calls with a disturbance heard in the background. The caller was identified as a fifth-grade student and the call was determined to be accidental, with the disturbance being classmates changing classes.

— A patrolling officer observed a vehicle off the roadway on state Route 344 just south of Commerce Drive at 12:57 a.m. Saturday. The roads were snow covered and the driver slid off the road and was unable to get back on the roadway. A tow company pulled the vehicle back onto the roadway. There was no damage to the vehicle and no citation issued.

— An officer responded to the American Legion on Main Street at 2:17 a.m. Saturday in reference to individuals who would not leave the facility. The officer spoke with the individuals and they all left without incident.

— Police responded to the Mennonite Church on Columbia Street at 6:56 a.m. Monday in reference to a tree limb that had fallen on the entrance sign after being struck by a box truck.

— An officer responded to an Orchard Hill Drive home at 10:54 a.m. Monday after the school resource officer reported a fifth-grade student at the home was refusing to go to school. The officer found the student sleeping on the couch. The student said he had slept in and was the only one at home. The officer stood by while the student gathered his belongings and then drove him to school.

— Police responded to a Chestnut Street home at 11:10 a.m. Monday where Salem police reported a resident had threatened suicide by train. The resident was not found at home and no one was found along the railroad tracks.

LISBON

— Police were called to a domestic dispute at the home of Glenda Knight, North Market Street, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Knight said her daughter-in-law slapped her across the face hard enough to leave a bruise, while her son pushed her against the wall and threw a large toy out of place. Knight became frightened and locked herself in her bedroom until police arrived. By then her son and daughter-in-law had left, and Knight declined to press charges.

— Police responded to a report of a dog running loose on West Washington Street at 7:32 p.m. Saturday. The officer was unable to catch the dog but did follow it back to the home of its owner, Michelle Hall. She did not know the gate was open and her dog was loose. Hall believes someone intentionally opened the gate.

— Police were called to Applegrove apartments at 7:17 p.m. Friday in regard to a medical situation involving a male resident. The man said he was feeling funny after taking 32 Coricidin pills in attempt to get high while playing video games for the past six hours. Police remained until an ambulance arrived to transport the man to a local hospital.

— Eric Kibler, West Pine Street, reported Friday both of his cars had been keyed on the side and there was a dent on one of the vehicles.

— A home at 426 N. Jefferson St. was found unsecured at 11 a.m. Friday. The screen door was broken along with a window on the interior door, which was unlocked. Police entered the home and it appeared as if someone was in the process of moving out, with only a refrigerator and microwave oven left. The officer locked the door, left and called the owner.

— Kenneth R. Jordan, 44, West Pidgeon Road, Salem was charged with theft and Cena Mason, 23, Annesley Road, East Liverpool, was charged with complicity to theft. This is related to the theft of a $17 wallet from Smith Oil on March 25.

COLUMBIANA

— James Johnson, one of the owners of Shellabella’s, reported at 4 p.m. Sunday someone pulled the valve stems out of his son Devon’s tires sometime during the night and also tried to break into the restaurant by pulling on the rear door.
