Local man killed in police chase

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Guilford Lake man was killed Thursday morning in a crash on Interstate 680 here. News partner, WKBN First News, identified the man as 47-year-old Steven Mango.

Mango was involved in a high-speed chase with police when his pickup truck, traveling the wrong way in the northbound of I-680, collided with a semi truck.

The incident began, WKBN reported, when Mango robbed the Dollar Tree on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown.

With police in pursuit, Mango took I-680 south until reaching the Ohio Turnpike in Beaver Township. He turned around at the turnpike entrance, WKBN said, and fled back north, at one point moving into the southbound lane.

The incident ended when the pickup truck and semi collided head-on. The truck driver suffered minor injuries. The crash shut down the northbound lane of the highway for much of the afternoon.

Mango also was involved in an incident in Columbiana County on Wednesday. His mother reported he had entered her Woodsdale Road home near Guilford Lake while she was in the shower. When she got out, her purse was missing.

The purse contained her credit and debit cards, other personal information and about $150.
