WASHINGTONVILLE — A standoff that lasted about an hour and a half in the heart of Washingtonville on Wednesday ended peacefully with 37-year-old David Crow being taken to St. Elizabeth’s in Youngstown for evaluation.

The standoff started with an attempted traffic stop at state Route 14 and South County Line Road shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Washingtonville police, Patrolman Christopher Helsel observed Crow in a black Chevy Cobalt run the red light at the intersection. The driver did not stop but proceeded to Leetonia High School where some kids exited his car and went inside the school.

Helsel approached the car, police said, and saw Crow had lottery scratch-offs and a knife in his hand. At the officer’s request Crow placed them on the passenger seat. Crow gave Helsel his information and the officer returned to his cruiser and found the Social Security number he was given did not match any of the other information.

Helsel returned to find the man with the knife in his hand again and as Helsel tried to talk to him further, the man reportedly started the car and sped away peeling tires.

Helsel called for backup and a short, relatively slow speed pursuit ended with Crow pulling into the driveway of his house at 370 state Route 14 in Washingtonville.

Crow ran into the house with his hands hidden and refused to come out, police said. Helsel called for backup with Leetonia and Goshen Township officers first on the scene followed by Columbiana’s K-9 unit, deputies from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Washingtonville Police Chief Ken Faust and Salem Township Chief Dan Valentine.

Mahoning County Sgt. John Boggs and Deputy Sanchez shouted back and forth with Crow, eventually entering the house and walking him to the Leetonia Fire/EMS squad who transported him with Helsel following them to St.Elizabeth’s, where Faust believes he will remain for a few days.

Faust said at this point he will be charged with fleeing and eluding with other charges possibly pending. Faust said his department had dealt with Crow a couple weeks ago following a neighbor complaint.

No one was injured in Wednesday’s incident.
