DAMASCUS -- A Beloit man died of injuries Tuesday sustained after he was struck by a pickup while chasing a cow in a hayfield near the Damascus Livestock Auction.
The man, 58-year-old Douglas S. Dye, had brought a cow to the auction and when he let it out of the trailer, it got loose and ran into a hay field next door, according to information obtained when Columbiana County Sheriff's Deputies spoke to the driver of the pickup, Konrad VanPelt, who works at the auction.
VanPelt of Columbiana had gotten into his brother's truck and drove into the field to help herd the cow. The cow changed directions and to stop it from heading toward the road, VanPelt said he put the pickup into reverse. The cow bumped into the truck and then he heard screams from Dye. VanPelt said he stopped the truck and drove forward, concerned the back tire was on top of Dye.
When he got out to check, VanPelt said Dye was screaming and moving around panicked. The EMS which responded reported Dye to be unresponsive, a lifeflight helicopter was canceled and he was transported to Salem Regional Medical Center. Medical staff reported to deputies Dye died as a result of his injuries.
