LEETONIA -- Students will be on remote learning through Martin Luther King Day.
Superintendent Dennis Dunham reported Thursday night instruction will be remote when students return Jan. 4. Students will not return to face-to-face instruction until Jan. 19.
Dunham said the remote learning is out of caution from community spread of COVID-19, which is expected to increase after the holidays.
"We understand how critical it is for students to have face-to-face instruction and routine," Dunham said. "This is being done out of a sheer abundance of caution."
Also at the meeting, Dunham said he conducted a study of the K-12 campus facility's efficiency regarding instruction of students. He reported he has recommended several changes in the use of facilities that will be put into place over the next couple weeks.
The changes include moving administrative office space closer to the front of the campus, the speech/pathology office to the elementary library, the e-sports area closer to the high school and the school resource officer and transportation director offices to the board office. They also include converting the high school library into a technology corridor that students can walk by and see the classes or enter for the opportunity to experiment with materials
"I believe these changes will help serve students in a better way," Dunham said.
In other business, the board granted a supplemental contract to Paul Gray as baseball head coach for the 2020-2021 school year. The board also approved Gray as interim junior high boys basketball coach effective Dec. 16 through Jan. 6 at $35 per day while coach Glenn Windram recovers from an illness.
The board, as fiscal agent for the Leetonia Community Public Library, also appointed Willard Lutz as library board trustee for the term of January 2021 through December 2027.
Additionally the board accepted donations of $2,729 from various community members and organizations for the Student Assistance Fund-Christmas and $100 from John and Sue Frenger for the Rob Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The board's reorganizational meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 14.
