LEETONIA -- The Leetonia school district is now offering a before and after school care program for elementary students.

Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham this week told the school board the program is a free service offered for students in grades kindergarten through six for parents who need assistance before and/or after school hours. The program is available 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m. weekdays.

Dunham noted the current only requires a coordinator, but an aide will be available if numbers increase.

The board then approved Mike Frenger as program coordinator for the remainder of the school year, effective Jan. 14 at $25 per hour and Rick Davis as aide.

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Paul Gray as head baseball coach, effective Jan. 6 and approved supplemental coaching contracts for the spring season to Todd Kibby for head baseball, Dylan Dickey for assistant baseball, Nick Hulea for head boys track and Benjamin Johnson Bowers for head girls track.

The board also approved Amy Gibson, Fred Bruderly, Alexa Bruderly, Matt Burns, Artie Altomare, Wendy Meek, Marilyn Heddleson and Matt Manley as nine-week substitute teachers for the third nine weeks at a rate of $100 per day during the pandemic. They will not be eligible for medical benefits.

Additionally, the board accepted donations of $1,000 from Bob Hendricks for the John Hall Scholarship, $100 from American Legion Post 131 for the girls basketball supplemental fund, $300 from the Leetonia Eagles for the boys basketball supplemental fund, $50 from Susan Simpson for unpaid lunch student accounts, $700 from the Leetonia Eagles for the nurse supplemental fund for student assistance, $5,000 from Salem Chapter O.E.S. for the Star of East Scholarship, $500 from Walter Rohrer, Colleen Dattilio and Melanie Stelts for the Judy Rohrer Memorial Scholarship and $390 from various community members for the student assistance fund for Christmas.

Also at the meeting, Dunham praised the board members as part of School Board Recognition Month. He said he couldn't have asked for a better group of individuals to work with in his first seven months and encouraged community members to express their gratitude, as well.

"[The board] meets once a month…but you're never not on call," he said, noting each member is easy to approach and their caring is what makes Leetonia great.

During its reorganizational meeting, the board elected Christina Bulford as president and Richard Hendricks as vice president.

Additionally, the board assigned members to the following: Larry Duko as OSBA legislative liaison; Dan Votaw as student achievement liaison; Duko as Columbiana County Career and Technical Center representative; Votaw and Bulford for policy and guidelines; Votaw and Duko for academic; Hendricks and Michael Henderson for building and grounds; Duko and Henderson for insurance; and Hendricks and Bulford for athletic council.

The board also set meetings for 6 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month in the elementary library.
