LISBON -- Ross Chaplow, the Columbiana area man who physically assaulted a good samaritan and took a power saw to his pickup truck, was sentenced to 20 months in prison by Common Pleas Judge Scott Washam on Thursday.
Chaplow, 39, West Park Avenue, Columbiana, said he was truly sorry and was not a violent person. He claimed it was the LSD and crystal meth that caused him to act the way he did.
Instead of the 20-month sentence being requested by Assistant County Prosecutor Alec Beech, Chaplow and his defense attorney Chris Amato were asking for help through an inpatient drug addiction facility.
"I have an 11-year-old son," said Chaplow, who said he has been battling drug addiction for 20 years. "I want to get clean and help him not to turn out like me."
Washam questioned why in 20 years Chaplow had not sought help on his own. He responded that he did not really believe he had a serious problem until he found it was going to cost him time with his son.
Chaplow was sentenced on Thursday in three cases. One was from Sept. 6, 2020, when Beech said Chaplow seemed to be broken down and Andy Entriken went outside to try to help him jump the battery. Instead Chaplow assaulted Entriken, smashed windows in Entriken's home, took some of his power tools and used a power saw to damage Entriken's truck.
Additionally, Chaplow picked up a piece of asphalt and threw it at Deputy Caleb Wycoff's head after he responded from the county sheriff's office. Those were charges of vandalism and two counts of assault.
The other charges were three counts of aggravated possession of drugs for having methamphetamines on Jan. 16, 2020, Aug. 27, 2020 and July 7, 2018.
