Goshen Township trustees open bids for long-awaited road project

By Kevin Howell 2 min read

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- Trustees Monday night opened sealed bids for the Smith Goshen Road resurfacing project, then tabled the issue so the Mahoning County Engineer's Office can review them.

The project addresses the stretch of roadway between state Route 165 and Middletown Road. It is being funded through a $168,952 Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) grant, with the township responsible for $78,303 to complete the project.

The township received six bids: RT Vernal at $146,978, Lindy Paving at $142,471.75, Barbicas Construction at $136,622.20, Chagrin Valley Paving at $154,107, Yarian Brothers Construction at $196,537.12 and Kirila Contractors at $142,474. They were turned over to Bob Durbin of the Mahoning County Engineer's Office to review.

Trustees will award a bid at the next regular meeting or an earlier special meeting if possible.

The project includes open ditches on both sides of the road that will collect surface water.

Trustee Shawn Mesler last month said the initial plans called for tile covered by gravel on both sides of the road, but the engineer's office said the drainage on the road is a problem with surface water and not under the road. Savings from the adjusted drainage portion makes it possible to install a better road surface material.

In other business, trustees approved the job description for cemetery sexton, including to coordinate and care for cemeteries, manage the legal aspect of burials and maintain records. The cemetery sexton responsibility is part of Road Foreman Matt Springer's duties, but had not been defined.

Trustees also approved the application to Sourcewell as a purchasing agency. The township currently uses DAS as a purchasing agency, but Springer said having both available will provide more opportunities for savings.

Springer also reported brush along township roads will be collected in the next few days. He said the department is cutting all the brush first, then returning to pick up the brush after the cutting is done because it saves time

The next regular trustees meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 12 at the administration building.
