LEETONIA -- Leetonia schools will be holding summer sessions to help students recover from any lost learning during the pandemic.
Gov. Mike DeWine has asked school districts to submit Gap Closure plans to address educational setbacks experienced by children during the Covid-19 pandemic. The plan has to be submitted to the Ohio Department of Education by April 1.
According to Superintendent Dennis Dunham, the district is planning a Bear Care K-6 Summer Camp July 5 through Aug. 5 for students entering grades kindergarten through six. It will include fun summer activities on and off campus with free breakfast and lunch plus transportation.
The Leetonia 7-12 Summer Series, for students entering grades seven through 12, will be held in two sessions -- June 7 through July 1 and July 5 through Aug. 5. It will include field trips, enrichment, credit recovery and technology skills training with free breakfast and lunch plus transportation.
Dunham said he is also looking to continue the before/after care program this summer featuring enrichment activities to prepare for the fall. The summer programs will be half day sessions with staffing determined by enrollment, Dunham said.
The district will pay for programs with the coronavirus-related Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) II funds.
Dunham said the programs are still in the planning stage, but offer a chance to keep student instruction moving forward during recovery from the pandemic.
"[The programs] provide opportunities to students that they have not had in over a year," he said.
Dunham noted the fourth nine-weeks in-person instruction is at 95 percent for grades kindergarten through six and 85 percent for grades seventh through 12.
