LEETONIA - Bids are being sought for the turf replacement at the K-12 campus stadium and will be opened May 11.
Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham this week reported a legal notice advertising for bids for the project that includes replacing the current top soil field with synthetic turf as well as installation of a drainage system. The documents will remain online for approximately two weeks
Dunham said excavating is set to start May 12 with the drainage work beginning May 24. The project is on schedule to be completed Aug. 19, one day before the first home football game.
Bids will be opened May 11 in the board offices. A special board meeting will be scheduled that day to award a bid.
According to information previously released by Dunham, the project is part of the overall sports complex phased improvement plan initiated in 2004. The district has seen a variety of improvement at the stadium since 2004 in terms of bleachers, lighting, press box, locker room, concession stand, etc.
The cost of the project will be included in the district's current loan payments for the construction of the stadium in 2004. That loan is scheduled to be paid off in April 2025 with semi-annual payments of $62,500, but will be reworked to include the proposed renovation. The new loan will have an interest rate of 3.01 to 3.75 percent with payments of approximately $63,760 to $66,000 semi-annually over 10 years.
In other business, the board accepted retirement effective May 28 of fourth-grade teacher Maria Frenger, who has been with the district for 19 years; and the resignations of Shawn Yocum as part-time front door office assistant effective April 9 and Jenna Rydarowicz as K-6 guidance counselor effective July 31. The board also approved John McIlduff and Matt Burns as home instruction tutors and Laura Celidonio as an after school tutor.
Additionally the board granted supplemental contracts for the 2021-2022 school year to Ron Schneider for girls head golf coach, Guy Costello for boys head varsity basketball coach, Molly Coffee for academic challenge, Tayler Howell for assistant band director, Randall Rodik for band director, John McIlduff for fall game manager, Melissa Brock for freshman class advisor, Leanna Meeks for girls assistant basketball coach, John Hritz for girls basketball head coach, Marsha Coffee for high school detention monitor, Robert Vaia for junior high head football coach, Mary Rice for Leetonia Online coordinator, Debbie Bair for middle school detention monitor, Debbie Bair for middle school student council advisor, Molly Coffee for NHS advisor, Christy Temple for resident educator program coordinator, Debbie Bair for resident educator mentor, Molly Coffee for resident educator mentor, Michelle Long for robotics coach, Marsha Coffee for SADD coordinator, Debbie Bair for Saturday school detention monitor, Rick Mulinix for Saturday school detention monitor, Whitney Wallace for head volleyball coach, Christine Hames for resident educator mentor, Cleone Smith for Saturday school detention monitor, Melanie Dolak for Saturday school detention monitor, Gretchen Hull for Saturday school detention monitor, Paul Hulea for varsity head football coach and Mary Rice for winter game manager.
The board also accepted $2,320 from various community members for the Leetonia Elementary School Library Fund in memory of Gloria Rubbo, $100 from John and Connie Frenger for the nurse supplemental/food pantry and $100 from Steel Valley Naturals for the baseball fund.
Dunham reported graduation is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 21 in the high school gym. Capacity will be limited to 25 percent and graduates will receive four tickets each for family and friends. The event will also be livestreamed.
