COLUMBIANA -- There will be fireworks in the city on July 4, but not at Firestone Park.
Heidi Dattilio, president of the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce, and Lana Wilt, chairwoman of the Fourth of July Committee, came before city council this week to announce plans to relocate the fireworks. Fireworks will be displayed on July 4, which is a Sunday, at Shaker Woods Village.
"We just wanted to give the plants some time before ten thousand people trampled through the park," said Dattilio; referring to the construction throughout Firestone Park.
Plans to relocate fireworks only include this year.
Dattilio mentioned that moving the fireworks will also help if people are still required to social distance. People can stay by or inside their vehicles and enjoy July 4 festivities.
Planning is still in process, but Noel and other council members are eager to utilize the grounds.
Dattilio also mentioned there will be food trucks during the festivities.
Dattilio also bought counci's attention to her new business, the Waggin' Wagon, which will consist of her driving an orange golf cart around town with a trailer. The golf cart is street legal.
"If you have a dog and you hear the sound, come outside, I'll be happy to give them a treat," said Dattilio.
In other news, the Firestone Park pool will open May 24. The park board is still in the process of determining whether pavilions will be open.
Park officials are working to find a plan that would satisfy state and county health boards.
In other matters, City Manager Lance Willard suggested residents who need help with utilities due to Covid use the city website to determine if they qualify for assistance.
"There's a lifeline out there," said Willard.
Willard explained that the guidelines are online and the process to apply is seamless and painless. Utilities can be covered as far back as April 2020.
Moving forward, Clerk of Council Deann Davis presented a check from the Columbiana Community Foundation for $15,000 for pavilion windows. Willard said the windows will be a great addition to the Joy of Christmas event.
Other events include a new sign being unveiled at the Columbiana Corridor next Tuesday. Utilities will also be installed in the corridor to accommodate the furniture, fountain and fire pit that will arrive within the next two weeks.
Due to the success of the students working in the corridor, the progress committee is interested in having a student participate in council. Students would not have a vote; , however, they would be involved with projects.
In other matters, a culture collective is being put in place to save the theater.
