Former WB teacher gets sentenced in sex case

Will receive two weeks in jail and two years probation, must register as tier 1 sex offender

RAVENNA — The former West Branch teacher accused of sexual contact with a minor will spend two weeks in jail.

Matthew Thomas, 51, formerly of Wagner Road, North Benton, was sentenced in Portage County Common Pleas Court Monday to 60 days in jail (all but 14 suspended) on an amended charge of third-degree misdemeanor gross sexual imposition. He was also placed on two years probation and must obtain a sex offense risk assessment within 30 days and undergo a mental health evaluation. He must also register as a Tier I sex offender.

Thomas pleaded guilty to the amended charge in June. He had originally been charged with two third-degree felony counts of gross sexual imposition for allegedly having sexual contact with a 10-year-old female over the first week of May 2015.

Thomas, a longtime soccer coach and history teacher at West Branch High School, was indicted by the Portage County grand jury in September 2020.

The incident was not school-related, according to court officials.

Starting at $2.99/week.
