Leetonia Street Department struck by Covid

LEETONIA -- Street Department Director Ed Allen reported the street crew is out of commission for the next two weeks due to Covid.

Allen has attempted to hire additional crew members, but many rejected offers due to wages. In order to get things done Allen has been utilizing water plant employees to help.

"I would ask that we would really consider our wage starting out as a laborer and see what we can do about raising that up," Allen said.

Rydar Tree Removal LLC has helped remove trees in the village destroyed by high winds.

In other business, Mayor Kevin Siembida spoke about submissions for two grants. The grants allow municipalities to improve waterlines.

Funds received from the grants would contribute to waterline work from Main Street to High Street along the loop to Wilson Street. Another grant would improve lines along Beeson Mill Road.

Councilman Neal Bayless will be speaking to both police and fire chiefs regarding grant opportunities. The grants would make the village eligible for up to $50,000 in funds.

In other matters, water operator Lisa Smith reported a new operating system has been installed at the water treatment plant. No formal training has been given; however, Smith is able to remotely access the system and monitor alarms.

The generator located at the reservoir had batteries replaced and reprogrammed Aug. 17.

"That is the generator that runs the whole water system reservoir, water tower pumps and everything. If we lose power, the backup wasn't working," said Smith. "So, that was an immediate thing we needed to get fixed."

Hydrant flushing will resume on the south side of the village near East High Street and Wilson Street. The process will take several months according to Smith.

Maintenance on wastewater plant equipment has been completed. Several repairs have been discussed among officials.

Councilwoman Sue Strobel has concerns regarding the dark maple trees dying.

"It's not just Leetonia's trees. Columbiana's are doing the same thing," Strobel said.

Siembida pointed out he has also noticed.
