Funding woes frustrate Leetonia police chief
LEETONIA–Police Chief Allen Haueter became heated Wednesday when his request to attract law enforcement candidates to the village was met with dismissal.
“We are folding up fast. If you are going to defund us, let’s do it now,” Haueter remarked.
Haueter explained the sheriff’s office is covering weekend shifts and the Columbiana Police Department is assisting on calls due to multiple shifts without coverage.
“I keep getting put off and delayed,” Haueter remarked. “I need an answer.”
Haueter expressed frustration with the lack of funding and said he refused to work alone when he could be taking advantage of retirement.
“Columbiana, thank God for their guys. If I need somebody they come over and help us,” Haueter said.
Haueter said he is not looking to have multiple men per shift, only to fill the shifts he has.
“Where am I going to get money,” councilman Neal Bayless inquired during a heated discussion.
Mayor Kevin Siembida addressed Haueter’s frustrations, explaining the village is working hard to resolve multiple issues taking place throughout the village. A meeting regarding village finances is being planned.
Also, EMS Chief Robert Sanchez addressed a need for a new monitor.
Sanchez said the monitor is not holding a charge anymore and has become unreliable.
Siembida requested Sanchez submit quotes.
