COLUMBIANA — Educators for Columbiana Middle School’s sixth-grade class are preparing to take a chilly plunge in snowy Lake Erie Saturday to raise funds for Camp Fitch.

“I’m nervous because of the cold,” Sixth Grade Language Arts teacher Jennifer Martin said nervously. ‘But it’s for the kids,”

Sponsors from multiple school districts will gather at Camp Fitch in North Springfield, Pa. Saturday for a day long fundraising event. Educators Jennifer Martin, Hannah Mowery, Audra Hatch and Ron Moser are among 850 polar bears jumping into freezing waters within the last eleven years. An online campaign created by Martin has raised $2,262.65 out of a $3,000 goal sending students to camp.

Camp Fitch hosts the annual Polar Bear Plunge, Duck Regatta & Polar High Roller giving all students a chance to attend Camp Fitch. Sixty-six middle school students are prepared to enjoy an interactive outdoor experience for the first time since 2019.

Students participate in archery, horseback riding, canoeing, candle making and exploring the past by engaging in experiences reflecting the lives of Native Americans and early settlers. Students also learn about the history of Lake Erie.

“Although it’s outside the class room they are still learning a whole new set of skills and things you can’t do between four walls,” Martin said.

Martin enjoys watching the students interact outside the classroom where she has witnessed students emerge as leaders and help classmates.

“Sometimes kids who struggle in the classroom thrive in environments like that,” she said.

Martin has a special connection to camp fitch. As a former camp counselor she experienced making lifetime memories at Camp Fitch. She believes it’s important for students to disconnect from technology and enjoy an experience many families may not have the fortune to enjoy again.

“They have to talk to each other. They have to learn to get along,” she explained.
