COLUMBIANA -- A local family was honored by the city school district recently for its generosity and compassion.
During this month's board of education meeting the AJ Hunt family was presented with the Key Clipper award for its various forms of giving to the district.
The family was nominated by Dr. Kim Sharshan, who serves as elementary school principal.
Sharshan said in her nomination and to the board during the meeting that AJ and his family continuously give to the children and families of Columbiana schools.
"Generosity is considered a virtue. It is when you give your all and yet you always feel as if it costs you nothing," she said.
She said that the family has given countless time, money and items of need.
"Others have benefited from this family as they have paid off all reduced lunch balances and have donated items of need and toys for little ones whose families do not have the means to provide beyond the necessities. Words cannot describe the lessons this family is teaching their children and mine as well," Sharshan said.
She went on to say that when she thinks of the Hunt family she is reminded of a John Bunyan quote: "You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you."
Also during the board meeting, the board recognized high school senior Delaney Finsley, who was named Microsoft PowerPoint Ohio State Champion.
Finsley has been selected to compete in Certiport's 2023 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship at the Hilton Lake Buena Vista Hotel in Orlando, Fla. June 26-28. There she will have the opportunity to compete against the other top scoring students across the country to win scholarships, prizes, trophies, certificates, the title of U.S. National Champion, and an all expenses paid trip to the World Championship.
Additionally, Finsley was named "Distinguished Young Woman of Ohio!"
She competed against 10 other girls from across the state in The Distinguished Young Women of Ohio competition. The competition's categories included Scholarship, Interview, Self Expression, Talent and Fitness. In June, she will travel to Mobile, Ala. to compete in the national competition. She won $4,000 in scholarship money.
Superintendent Don Mook said the Clipper family is proud to have Finsley represent not only the district but the state as well in these competitions.
"Congratulations Delaney," he said.
