COLUMBIANA -- A project to upgrade a Columbia Gas pipeline along state routes 7 and 14 to East Park Avenue is expected to begin soon, with the work expected to take about two months.
Columbiana City Council approved emergency legislation during its March 21 meeting allowing an easement on the property that runs parallel to state Route 7 behind Dunkin' Donuts.
City Manager Lance Willard said the company held a meeting in council chambers earlier that day regarding the scope of the project.
"They are going to be in a right of way all along Route 14," he said.
Information pertaining to the project was posted on the city's website, showing that Columbia Gas and its contractor, Miller Pipeline, will be installing approximately 10,000 feet of new pipe that will serve 50 properties on sections of state Route 14 and East Park Avenue.
The gas company said that the project will "strengthen the natural gas delivery system in the area while also enhancing capacity for nearby industrial customers."
Gas customers can expect to experience individual interruptions in service when their meters are being replaced. The company anticipates service will need to be shut off to each home for about two to four hours while employees perform meter replacement.
On another matter, Willard announced that the city will be taking applications for an unexpired term on the planning commission following the resignation of commission member Tucker Cope at the last meeting.
"We do thank him for all the time that he has put into that," Willard said of Cope's service.
The unexpired term ends on Dec. 31, 2025.
Letters will be accepted until April 13.
