SALEM - The April meeting of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers' Honorary was held at the Salem Emmanual Lutheran Church. An inspirational poem and prayer were offered by Maralyn Porter. Dinner was provided by Chris Phillis of Affordable Catering.
Pam Todd conducted the business meeting. The minutes and treasurer's reports were accepted. A thank you was received from Lisa Wallace and Scott Lewis, co-directors of The Brightside Project in Salem, for the chapter's donation of $250. Scholarship Chairperson Ann Hall announced that the organization will be offering a $500 scholarship to three high school senior students planning on going into education this fall. These will be announced at their Award's Day Program.
The program was provided by Mandy McCowin, occupational therapist and supervisor of the OT/PT at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center (CCESC). She spoke about autism and the screening process. Her role is to provide assessments that improve clinical evaluation, inform diagnosis and guide therapy. McCowan cited various assessment tools used with toddlers through high school age students. The main goal of the therapists is to help children and teens develop functional life skills to use at home, school and in the real world.
