LEETONIA -- The Leetonia High School and Elementary School have been recognized as Purple Star schools from 2023 through 2026.
Superintendent Dennis Dunham explained that the Ohio Department of Education presents the Purple Star Award to schools that show eager commitment to ensuring Ohio's military connected children receive the support required to "ensure their unique social, emotional and academic needs are met." Dunham said this support is necessary to ensure these military connected students are able "to be successful in school and when transitioning between school settings."
Dunham said that 156 schools in the state of Ohio had been designated purple star schools this year, with 88 schools receiving the designation for the first time and 77 in renewal.
The district had further cause for pride as Dunham announced that the Leetonia Middle School Varsity Rocket League Team had placed fourth overall in the state of Ohio.
"Fourth in the state is something to be proud of, so congratulations to those students," said Dunham.
Dunham also highlighted some of the other exciting things going on in the district, reminding resident's that the annual Scholarship Banquet will be held May 10 at A La Carte Catering and that the district's graduation ceremony will be held 1 p.m. May 27 in the high school gym.
Personnel items approved by the board included the hire of Bridget Lazer as a two-hour aide for the 2022-2023 school year; one-year limited teaching contracts for Kerri Ackler, Tyler Cintron, Laurie Crisan, Kaitlyn Culp, Mike Frenger, Jennifer Hartman, Brad Katzman and Carrie Roller for the 2023-2024 school year; two-year limited teaching contracts for Joseph Bruderly, Brianna Crawford, Randall Rodik, Shana Prince Smith and Tricia Viets for the 2023-2024 school year; continuing teaching contracts for William Altenhof, Marsha Coffee, Laura Celidonio, Lori Noles and Kimberly Breedlove for the 2023-2024 school year; and two-year classified contracts for Scott Andre, Cheryl Firestone, Alisha Hancox, Brian Hollabaugh, Brandy Renforth, Tim Smith, Jennifer Stock, Lori White, Jennifer Shar and Elizabeth Cole for the 2023-2024 school year.
The board also approved a new internet, application, voice and wireless services agreement with ACCESS for fiscal year 2024.
