Perry Township tire collection set for June 2

By Morgan Ahart 2 min read

PERRY TOWNSHIP -- The township will be accepting old tires for disposal again this year.

Trustee Tony Ieropoli said that collection will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 at the township garage at 1320 Depot Road. They will be accepting car, riding mower and pickup truck tires to a maximum of five per household at no cost to residents. These tires must be removed from the rim prior to the collection date, and no large truck or tractor tires will be accepted.

Trustees also discussed complaints of excessive speed on Jones Drive and Beechwood and Stewart roads. Trustee Jim Armeni said that the issues on Jones Drive seemed to stem from members of the Allegheny Wesleyan Church leaving services and questioned whether a letter to the church may help to combat the issue.

Trustee Chairman Steve Bailey suggested that in the past when the township had issues with excessive speed it had seen success posting additional patrols in the area to deter the behavior further. He suggested the township should pursue this methodology before proceeding with any more significant steps like official correspondence or a reduction in the speed limit, with Armeni and Ieropoli both in agreement.

In personnel matters, trustees passed a motion to accept the resignation of full-time officer Zachary Sanford effective May 28 and to pay out all unused vacation days, sick days and comp hours, taking the department down to four full-time officers. Bailey said Sanford had accepted a full-time position with the Salem Police Department after five years in Perry Township.

Bailey said that while the department would be down a man the department intended to keep its current representative to the Columbiana County Drug Enforcement Task Force in place for the time being and to fill the void with part-time officers.

A motion to appoint John Volio as Perry Township's Official Certified Public Records Trainee was also approved.

The board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. June 12.
