SALEM -- The Salem community came together to celebrate the 17th annual National Day of Prayer Thursday.
"Prayer has long been a positive force in Salem that has united our citizens in community and reverence," said Mayor Cyndi Baronzzi Dickey.
This year's program was held at the Salem Memorial Building and had the theme "Pray fervently in righteousness."
In addition to spiritual leaders from the area several notable Salem community members were present to speak and lead prayers at this year's ceremony. This year's program also featured musical performances by the Allegheny Wesleyan College Orchestra and the Keller Family. The annual flag presentation and pledge of allegiance, pledge to the Christian flag and pledge to the Bible were led by local boy scout members Mackenzi Spence, Zach Gillis, Brandon Eastek and Eric Swiger.
Salem High School Alumni Association Executive Director Audrey Null led the prayer for education; Fire Safety Inspector Kevin Bryan led the prayer for safety forces and health care workers; Columbiana County Prosecutor and U.S. Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Vito Abruzzino led the prayer for military; and Dickey issued an official proclamation naming May 4, 2023, the 17th annual National Day of Prayer in Salem.
In addition to leading their respective prayer each also shared their hopes for the well-being and future of their respective subject of prayer. Bryan said that he felt the fact he had been asked to speak was God's will as in addition to being the National Day of Prayer Thursday was International Firefighter's Day.
