SALEM--A fire broke out at a popular Salem restaurant Tuesday morning.
A fire was reported at popular East State Street restaurant Coaches Burger Bar at 8:49 a.m. Tuesday, which began outside before advancing into the kitchen. The fire was ultimately found to have been caused by a cigarette being improperly discarded near some mulch outside the door.
In accordance with department policy all off-duty personnel were paged in, and automatic aid was dispatched from the Perry Township, Green Township, and Damascus Fire departments. When the department arrived smoke could be seen from the building and construction workers were attempting to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters advanced a one and three quarter attack line to the back door by the kitchen, where firefighters forced the door for building access and the fire was doused. The walls and ceiling were then opened up to extinguish the remaining fire, and the second floor was checked for fire extension, finding none; and all incoming mutual aid that was not already present was called off.
Smoke was present on the first and second floor, and cooking oil was present on the kitchen floor that was spilled when plastic containers melted. The electricity was shut off in the affected area at the breaker panel and oil dry and absorbent pads were applied to the ground to clean up the oil.
The health department was requested to respond in accordance with policy for smoke damage to the kitchen area of a restaurant and employees and representatives from the business on site began clean-up and repairs.
