Firestone dog park set for soft open

COLUMBIANA -- The city's dog park near the community walking trail will hold a soft opening soon, City Manager Lance Willard told council earlier this month.
The large park on 1.75 acres in Firestone Park features two separate areas for large and small dogs, water, and climbing and play obstacles to keep dogs entertained.
The project is one of the many efforts of the Restoration and Beautification Committee of Columbiana to improve Firestone Park.
"The dog park is looking great. It will be a very nice addition to the park," Willard said.
In other business, council also approved a new 5k run/walk to raise funds for the Youngstown Humane Society.
Blake Sitch, Director of Operations for Athletix, a large sports complex on state Route 7 in the city, requested approval for the "Mutt Strut" the business will hold on Sept. 16.
Athletix opened to the public in September 2022.
"We are glad to be here, glad to see you guys here, and also support the community," Sitch told council.
Sitch said the business plans to host the race each year.
"We appreciate Athletix being in Columbiana. You're a great addition to the city and we appreciate your efforts," Mayor Rick Noel said.
Council also approved a request from Brian Frederick, owner of Eldritch Bazaar, to host a business grand opening today, Saturday and Sunday.
Frederick moved to the city in 2009 and the new business is geared toward board game enthusiasts.
In other matters during the meeting, council also approved:
-- An ordinance authorizing the city manager to enter into a contract with Greer Lime Company of Morgantown, W.Va., for the purchase of lime for the water treatment plant.
-- Giving a first reading to legislation authorizing the city manager to enter into a contract with Leyden Oil Company of Youngstown, for the purchase of gasoline and diesel fuel.
-- Giving a first reading to legislation authorizing the city manager to enter into a contract with Gledhill Road Machinery Company of Galion, Ohio, for the purchase of a truck bed, snow plow equipment and salt kit accessories for the street department's Western Star dump truck.
-- Giving first reading to an ordinance amending section 1062.06(b)(4) of section 106207 of the codified ordinances of the city regarding rental rates in the recreation park and repealing all other ordinances. The amendment will change the cancellation notification time frame from 48 hours to two weeks.
-- Two resolutions regarding the apportionment of local government fund money to be distributed next year.
-- An executive sessions to discuss the purchase of property. No action was taken.
The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. June 20.
